Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees, the road to elimination, game 3
....and that death we've all been waiting for came today. Three gopher-related split cards, each of which went against the Blue Jays -- now there's the shock of the year -- in the space of 4 batters early in the contest decided the game, and the season.... Danny Jackson (New York's version of Jim Abbott, except far luckier) was opposed by one-time ace Jack Morris for Toronto. Morris has been relegated to spot duty this season due to having a fairly lousy card, but has been one of the microscopic number of Blue Jay players who has done better than expected during this dismally underachieving campaign. Both starters would go the distance today, as the New York pitcher whose ERA is 5.6 against the rest of the league once again saved his very best for the Jays. Jackson raised his record to 3-1 against Toronto and lowered his ERA to 2.67. This is a conveniently timely development too: in his last 6 starts dating back to August 8, Jackson is 3-0 vs. Toronto (2.59 ERA) and 0-2 (7.15 ERA) against also-rans who apparently have a bit more luck on their side than the Jays do. Today's game started poorly for Morris; moments after 3 TOA batters had found nothing but Worst Possible Columns, HAL zeroed in on hits for the home team. But the Yanks mustered only a sac fly for a 1-0 lead. A GIDP thwarted a potential Toronto rally in the second and New York went right back to hitting; a surgical HBP started things off but Morris dodged the bullets and kept the deficit at 1. The Jays bounced back in the 3rd to take the lead when Devon White doubled home 2 runs with 1 out but was left in scoring position when Joe Carter had a split card chance at a home run, and of course missed and found the out. Two batters later, New York's Danny Tartabull had the exact same split card chance at a gopher or an out. Guess what? He didn't miss. The next batter also had a split card chance at a home run. Guess what? He didn't miss either. In the NYA 4th a helpful passed ball moved a runner up, so naturally the next batter delivered the run-scoring hit which made the score 4-2. That was important because Joe Orsulak's RBI single in the 6th narrowed the gap back to a solitary run with plenty of time left on the clock. But Orsulak's would be Toronto's last hit against the suddenly-competent NYA pitcher, and a couple of walks in the succeeding frames went nowhere. Final score: 4-3. |
