Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees, the road to elimination, game 4
The Jays conclude our penultimate road trip of 1993 having staved off the inevitable for a few more minutes. Today's contest featured the routine (LOB 11, miss almost every split card chance, choke away a five-run lead) but also the not-so-routine (we didn't lose!).... Another interesting contrast in "luck" between starting pitchers: Toronto's Pat Hentgen, a 20-game winner (so says his card) who has struggled just to achieve mediocrity in 1993, vs. New York's Scott Kamienicki, who has pitched miserably for the most part and therefore wins almost 75% of the time. Things went according to form then: Hentgen was mediocre (worse, actually) and Kamienicki was miserable. The only notable exception to the rule was that Kamen-lucky didn't win. Nor did he lose, despite being on the short end of a 6-1 score at the time of his premature departure. The Toronto offense today was mostly the Devon White Show. White led off the contest with a split card chance at a home run -- and didn't miss! He then doubled leading off the third (and was LOBbed), missing the same HR chance he had hit in the 1st, then homered again in the 4th. Three batters later, John Olerud came through with a 2-run double and the Yankee bullpen was summoned. Hentgen quickly gave back a run in the NYA 4th and then, needing just 3 more outs to qualify for what should have been an easy victory, Hentgen recorded exactly zero of those outs. He opened the NYA 5th with a free pass, a perfectly executed hit-and-run single, and followed those with an RBI split-card double and the coup de grace: a 3-run split-card gopher. Just like that, the 5-run Toronto lead was now a 0-run lead. Being in the process of forfeiting yet another important game, Hentgen's choke gave the Jays the opportunity to engage in some nostalgia -- we sent to the pen for Dave Stieb, acquired just days earlier off the scrap heap for sentimental reasons and surely not to help win games. But he most certainly and unexpectedly did help. Stieb faced 7 batters and permitted 3 of them to reach base, but nobody scored and the game remained knotted at 6. When Paul Molitor hit the Jays' third homer of the game leading off the 7th, and Tim Jones came through with a 2-run bases-loaded double with still nobody out (of course we LOBBed from that point on), Toronto had a 9-6 lead and Stieb was in line for the win! Not so fast. Mike Timlin took over for Stieb and momentarily lowered his ERA almost below the 9.0 mark. But a surgical split-card RBI triple from Mighty Mike Gallego cut our lead to 9-7 in the 8th. Jesse Orosco entered and immediately made it 9-8 when Gallego waltzed home on Randy Velarde's groundout. But Orosco hung in there and retired the next 4 NYA batters, 3 of them on strikeouts, and the Jays hung in there for a 1-run win via an incomplete choke. Final score: 9-8. Joe 'not a 4' Orsulak picked up where Kevin McReynolds had left off in left field, blowing every x-play hit his way, but he also added 4 hits to Toronto's 17-hit, 29-total base onslaught that should have resulted in a far easier victory. But the final margin turned out to be just enough. Stieb will end his season with a nice 1-0 record and 0.00 ERA, unless HAL brings Stieb in just to destroy him in front of the home fans. Alan |
