Showing complete evenhandedness, the Reds are in the process of choking each and every game to the Giants, just as we did a few weeks ago against the Braves.... Game 1: Greg Tubbs led off the contest by doing something no Cincy batter has ever done: drawing a split card of 1 on a HR 1, fb(B) 2-20! Although the Reds added a second run before the inning was over, it was still all downhill from there. The Giants more than matched that brief amount of split card luck that Tubbs got by coming up with TWO hits on a split of 1 in the bottom of the first. The big one was a 3-run gopher by Will Clark. San Fran extended the lead one inning later when, with (of course) 2 outs, HAL directed the ball towards our worst fielder who naturally botched it and gave the Giants 2 very critical undeserved runs. Luckless Jose Rijo and Even More Luckless Jeff Brantley held the Giants scoreless the rest of the day, and the Reds made it look close by getting 2 more good split cards (!!!) for home runs in the 4th inning -- both solo shots, natch -- but couldn't muster up the tying run. Final score: Reds lose, 5-4 on an unearned run. =============================================== Game 2: Repeating a disclaimer that we gave to the Giants not long ago, the Cincy management would like to assure the Atlanta Braves that we are NOT choking games away intentionally. But the Braves can be forgiven for presuming that the plethora of incredibly low-probability events that screwed the Reds today could not all have been accidental. First there were the three split cards that thwarted early Cincy rallies: 20, 20 and 20. Not far off our season average, but we took an early 3-0 lead anyway. Then there were the four times Giants batters found a column that was 100% empty except for a walk way up (or down) at one end. And ALL FOUR TIMES they got it (defying odds of nearly 1.7 million to 1). Add to that the lengthy series of timely blown x-plays by Cincy's non-4 fielders, and the choke was well underway. It began in the SFN 4th when, with -- you guessed it -- 2 outs, a surgical split card single kept the frame alive to set up the bases-loaded blown-x that made the score 3-2. Cincy starter Tim Belcher completed his monstrously underachieving 1993 season after 5 innings and was in line for that rarity known as a "victory". No such luck. Bobby Ayala and the Cincy Sabotage Defense blew it in the sixth on a free pass, a blown-x single and a blown-x error that plated a run which was just a tad less than earned. Kevin Mitchell attempted to haunt his ex-mates by giving the visitors the lead with a solo homer in the 8th, but the pair of sac flies and a 2-out RBI which rapidly followed in the bottom of the inning made it a 6-4 final. The Reds will be choking away -- but not intentionally -- the final two games shortly. Alan |
