The Reds' consistency in our utter lucklessness is truly incredible. Continuing the well-established theme, the Reds lost yet another 1-run decision thanks to the usual culprits of surgical split cards (in favor of our opponent), clutch 2 out hitting (in favor of our opponent) and timely blown x-plays (in favor of our opponent). It takes a lot to lose a game like this, but it's merely routine for the Reds.... The Reds LOBbed RISP in each of the first two frames, but unlike the previous two contests there was no early scoring from either side as Gross & Mulholland took shutouts into the 5th. The Reds broke on top again (in order to choke again) when Sabo & Larkin came up with back-to-back RBIs despite back-to-back adverse split cards. Gross not only had a shutout going, he had a no-hitter through 4 innings until Willie McGee led off the SFN 5th with a blown-x single. Amazingly, he did not come around to score. With 2 outs (uh oh) and the bases empty in the 6th, Gross allowed his first legitimate hit of the day, a seemingly harmless single to #2 hitter Mike Sharperson. Barry Bonds then stepped in. Bonds had been relatively quiet in the series up to now -- 2 for 6, both hits merely singles -- against the team he destroys more than any other in the league. And on it goes: Bonds rolled his column full of gophers, and wasn't about to miss even though he made it as tough as possible on himself. He rolled a BPHR chance and needed a split of 1 or 2 to hit it. These are the Reds; of course he hit it. That tied the game and ended Gross's day. Tom Browning came in to face 2 lefties and achieved perfection -- he didn't retire either one. He would have, but then we might have risked going an entire game without choking up a critical 2-out blown-x play and not given up yet another undeserved run. Luckless Larry Luebbers replaced Browning and 3 pitches to McGee later the Giants had their 3rd 2-out ribbie of the inning. The fourth one they got proved to be the game-winner, also by McGee, in the SFN 8th that made it 4-2. San Francisco reliever Mike Jackson turned wild in the 9th, issuing 3 free passes before departing with the bases full. Chris Sabo greeted Mark Dewey with a single that plated John Kruk. Lumbering Joe Oliver wisely chose not to try to score from second, leaving the bases still loaded with still just one out and our best hitter, Barry Larkin, coming up. Oliver may as well have tried to crawl home from second. These are the Reds; with every chance of tying the game or taking the lead, of course Larkin found a gb(A) to end the game. Final score: 4-3.
