Subject: BAA @ NYA Week 25

Despite a humiliating loss in the first game to the eventual AL East winners, the Orioles won the last road series of their disappointing 1993 season.

Game 1: NYA 10, BAA 0

Curt Schilling took the mound in the bottom of the first to the following sequence: Double, walk, wild pitch, RBI groundout, strikeout, walk, delayed steal of home on a double steal (chance of success: 35%.)  Score after one inning: 2-0 Yankees.  Dave Clark took Schilling deep to tack on another run in the second.  In the 7th, after Wade Boggs added an RBI single to make it 4-0, Schilling finally gave way with the based loaded and two outs to LZOGY (Left-Handed ZERO Out Guy) John O’Donoghue, who got whiplash from watching his only pitch turn into Paul O’Neill’s grand slam.  Another Boggs single and a Cal Ripken error in the 8th made it 10-0.  But those late inning runs were moot because of how Kent Mercker* pitched for the Yankees, allowing two hits (both to David Segui) and two walks (both to Brady Anderson.)  Heck, the Orioles couldn’t even score in the 5th, when the Yankees made two straight errors with zero outs.

Game 2: BAA 4, NYA 3

“Home plate?  Ah, *there* it is!”, said Ripken when he homered off Jimmy Key in the 2nd to give the Orioles a fleeting 1-0 lead.  But in the bottom of the 3rd, the 3rd and 4th walks of the young game by Greg Swindell set up a three-run homer by Randy Velarde.  The O’s tied the game 3-3 in the top of the 4th thanks to an RBI single by Craig Grebeck and an RBI groundout.  In the top of the 6th, an unlikely single by Jeff (.150) Tackett gave him his second RBI of the season and gave Baltimore a 4-3 lead.  Swindell, who’d finally found his control, allowed just 5 hits in 7 2/3 innings, and the Orioles bullpen actually had water instead of gasoline in their buckets to make the narrow lead stick and deny NY starter Jimmy Key a potential 20th win.

Game 3: BAA 5, NYA 3

Second inning doubles by Baltimore’s Mike Pagliarulo and Craig Biggio pushed the first run of the game across the plate.  In his last start of a disastrous season*, Orioles starter Mike Mussina finally looked like Mike Mussina, holding the Yankees hitless until Mike Stanley tied it 1-1 in the 5th with a solo HR.  In the top of the 6th, Pagliarulo doubled again, and this time Biggio homered for a 3-1 lead.  Their next time up, in the 8th, Pags singled and Biggio doubled him in, and finally someone else pitched in -Ripken singled Biggio home to make it 5-1.  Through seven innings, Mussina only allowed three hits and two walks while striking out seven, but he exhausted his final inning of usage and had to hope the bullpen came through to preserve his 10th win.  It looked bad in the 9th, when the usually reliable Ryan Murphy loaded the bases.  Brought in to face the tying run at the plate, Gregg Olson allowed two runs on a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice before “earning” his 21st save.

Good luck to all those more competent teams who made the playoffs.

* A side personal note: All my life I’ve been a dual allegiance Braves/Orioles fan.  In the Braves’ amazing 1991 worst-to-first season, when I was a stone broke librarian, I made it to only one game in Atlanta, on September 12.  Late season call-up Kent Mercker threw six no-hit innings, followed by fellow rookie Mark Wohlers and closer Alejandro Pena for the first three-pitcher no-hitter in NL history – preserved only by a clearly intentional Terry Pendleton “error” on an infield chopper in the 9th.  That’s in my top 5 MLB memories, along with interviewing Brooks Robinson, waving a small broom in Game 4 of the 1995 NLCS, seeing Hank Aaron hit one out as a kid at the 1972 All-Star Game in Atlanta, and taking my daughters to their first MLB game, the final game between the Braves and the Montreal Expos – where a foul ball by Eddie Perez conked my older daughter in the head.  Moments like those explain why we do this in the first place.  Feel free to share yours…

** Seriously?  2.3 more hits per 9 innings than your 1993 card?  Next you’ll tell me Mike Devereaux’s OPS will underperform by .154.  But since Devereaux will go on to hit the pivotal homer in the aforementioned Game 4 of the NLCS, I’ll cut him some slack.
