Previous message                 Next message Message #: 29861 Message from: Steve Bivens Sent: Feb 13, 2014 Subject: If you care...Robert Lee Johnson Thank you to those who responded to my initial inquiry regarding Robert Lee Johnson’s outfield arm rating in Strat.   Jason of the HRFL pointed out that this may be a “Chevy” season versus a “Cadillac” season Strat issue. (For those not in the know, a Cadillac season represents a season in which Strat took the time to do their minute calculations to provide accurate righty/lefty splits among other things.  A Chevy season represents the less minute calculations to produce a more generic representation of the righty/lefty splits).   Here is a breakdown of Bob Johnson by season for his assist totals (keeping in mind that this stat is not the end-all of an arm rating discussion),  Strat arm rating and season version (Chevy versus Cadillac):   Season             Assists             Arm Rating        Season Version 1933                 16                     +5                    Chevy 1934                 17                     -3                     Cadillac 1935                 13                     +5                    Chevy 1936                 13                     +5                    Chevy 1937                 14                     +5                    Chevy 1938                 21                     -2                     Cadillac 1939                 15                     +5                    Chevy 1940                 15                     +5                    Chevy 1941                 17                     -1                     Cadillac 1942                 18                     +5                    Chevy 1943                 11                     +5                    Chevy 1944                 23!!!                  +5                    Chevy 1945                 16                     +5                    Chevy   The pattern would appear to be obvious.  In the three seasons Strat actually did their homework Bob Johnson rated a better than average arm.  So the question is: what is broken in the Chevy formula that is creating this +5 arm?  To put the +5 arm in perspective: Carlton Fisk in 1979 hurt is arm (shoulder?) and in only 293 innings at CATCHER he threw out only 5 of 29 stolen base attempts and Strat rated his catcher arm at +5 (This seems excessive given that this equals just a bit more than 1 stolen base per nine innings caught, I don’t have the time or knowledge to discuss this intelligently).  That same year Fisk played two-thirds of an inning in left field and received a +4 arm for his trouble.  Bob Johnson plays the same left field and is worse than an injured Fisk???  Yikes!  I suspect even Miley Cyrus is worthy of a +5 or +6 arm if you put her in left at Fenway.   Bob Johnson passed away in 1982 so I suppose there is no need for a lawsuit against Strat for slandering his throwing arm.   Thanks for listening.        Steve Bivens                   General Manager    ALSCO Tacoma/Seattle This email message and any attachments are for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential and privileged information.  Any unauthorized review, use, disclosure or distribution is prohibited.  If your are not the intended recipient, please contact the sender by reply email immediately and destroy all copies of the original message.  Thank you.
