Subject: 1993 NLCS, game 1
(The series is being autoplayed @ league HQ by owner agreement.) You'd think that a game in which one team scores 6 runs and takes a no-hitter into the 9th inning would result in a rather easy victory, but that wasn't the case today.... The starters in game 1 of the 1993 NLCS were Jeff Fassero for the Expos and Greg Maddux for the Braves. Neither team could muster up a baserunner until Montreal's Ron Karkovice doubled with 1 out in the 3rd. With the opposing pitcher at the plate and Karkovice no real threat to steal, Maddux inexplicably lost his focus and balked the lead-footed catcher to third. Maddux quickly regained his composure and struck out Fassero but Marquis Grissom followed with an RBI single that might not have plated this particular runner from second. The Expos pounced on Maddux one frame later when Jeff Bagwell doubled home Moises Alou before there were any outs, and Larry Walker's single two batters later made it 3-0 in favor of the visitors. Atlanta got the only baserunner Fassero would permit when Jeff Blauser walked to open the ATN 4th, however the next three batters were retired easily to extinguish that "rally". Maddux's day came to an end in the 5th when 3 straight singles produced another run and a Bagwell groundout produced one more. Mark Wohlers relieved Maddux and would provide 1.1 perfect innings of work, but the score was now 5-0 and the Braves were struggling to come up with even a hit. Fassero had yet to reach even 100 pitches and even the partisan Atlanta crowd was now eager to see if he could finish the job, but the Montreal lefty did not leave the dugout to face the Braves in the 8th. Mel Rojas was summoned and he kept the no-hitter intact by taking care of the first two ATN batters on just 2 pitches before Tony Pena made Rojas work a little prior to weakly grounding out. Karkovice would score his second run of the game in the MON 9th when he opened the frame with a single against Jay Howell, made it to second on Rojas' sacrifice, and raced home from there on Mike Lansing's 2-out single to inflate the lead to 6-0. Pinch-hitter Jeff Treadway hit the ball hard to open the bottom of the 9th, but it was right at Carlos Baerga. Otis Nixon, batting 9th (the pitchers were in the #8 slot of the ATN lineup), then spoiled the no-hitter when he blooped a single in front of Grissom. At that point, the Montreal pitchers went entirely to pieces even though the Braves would not register even one more hit. Blauser was hit by a Rojas fastball and Mark Lemke drew a walk to load the bases. Dave Justice worked the count full but swung at a high pitch and Lansing made the catch near the stands to bring his team within one out of the win. Eddie Murray never lifted the bat from his shoulder -- he didn't need to -- as Rojas threw 4 pitches nowhere near the strike zone. That forced in a run and Rojas was ushered from the mound. Enter John Wetteland, who proved to be every bit as jittery as Rojas. It took him three pitches to plunk Ron Gant and force in another run. Terry Pendleton stepped in and watched Wetteland's next pitch sail to the backstop as one more run crossed the plate and the deficit was now only 6-3. Three pitches later, Pendleton was on first via another walk (the MON manager had ordered him to be pitched around), the bases were loaded and suddenly the tying run was at the plate in the person of Deion Sanders, substituting for Tony Pena. Like Justice, Sanders also went deep into the count, then found a pitch he liked and drove the ball deep to right field on a Grand Slam home run chance off Wetteland's card.... but the chance was only a 1-2 split and Sanders drew an 18 to end the game as the ball settled into Walker's glove at the warning track. Final score: 6-3. The Expos got the win, but they didn't look very pleased as they left the field. Game 2 will take place tomorrow with Tommy Greene and Tom Glavine as the scheduled starters. Alan |
