Previous message                 Next message Message #: 30173 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Mar 9, 2014 Subject: Blue Jays @ Red Sox Game 1 was a complete aberration; the next two games show quite clearly -- despite the fact that we got pretty good pitching -- that the Jays are once again the unchallenged kings of utter lucklessness....     Game 2: A bit of advice for teams facing Roger Clemens (or any other good pitcher): try not to roll **75%** of the time on his empty card.  But that was HAL's plan for the Toronto offense today, and he executed it to perfection.  Todd Stottlemyre pitched about as well as he possibly could for the Jays, permitting just 1 run through 6 innings.   Then HAL tightened the screws in the 7th, with 3 free passes and one timely 2-base error combining with a total of one hit to put 3 runs on the board for our opponent.    There was brief cause for concern in Beantown when Clemens failed to appear for the 8th inning, but the trainer quickly reported that Rajah (7 IP, 1 hit) was only suffering from a case of extreme boredom and would surely recover in time to make his next start.  Two Boston relievers continued with the microscopic-probability dice, getting the Jays to roll 8 more times on the pitchers' cards in the final two frames.    We got the tying run to the plate by loading the bases with 0 outs in the 9th, then promptly hit into a fatal DP.  Final score: 4-1.   =======================================================================   Game 3: And yet more microscopic probabilities prove disastrous to the Blue Jays, as they so often do.  Today it was even more unbelievable dice rolls and 100% adverse split cards -- are we in midseason form already, or what? -- that made a hero out of hapless gopher machine Sid Fernandez.   Speaking of gopher machines, Toronto's Jim Abbott like Stottlemyre before him pitched a very solid game which remained scoreless through 6 innings.  A 2-out RBI double victimized Abbott in the 7th, and a sac fly provided a needless insurance run in the 8th.  Final score 2-0.  Fernandez, like Clemens, tossed 7 shutout inning before yielding to (apparently) the top bullpen in the majors.   This series certainly didn't seem much like "1994 baseball", even during the opener, and the teams each scored 9 runs in the 3 games with the Jays naturally coming out on the short end thanks to losing the close ones.  Another bit of helpful advice: when playing a team that has pretty much only 1 good fielder (Jose Lind), try not to hit ALL of your x-plays his way.  Lind was 6 for 6 in the series including 4 for 4 in the finale, as the ball just seemed to find him every chance it got.   Alan
