Boston gets 2 good starts and 1 horrendous and wins 2 and loses 1. Go figure. game 1: Neither teams wasted any time getting on the board. Boston used a 2 base error, 2b and 1b to score twice in the top of the inning and Baltimore used 2 singles and a sac fly to score once. That's where things veered. Boston continued to score while Sele threw up 0's the rest of his start. In the 3rd, Boston got 3 singles, 2b, a walk and sac fly to score 3 times. In the 5th it was 4 singles, a double, 2 walks and yet another sac fly to plate 5 runs and the lead was 10-1. After getting an out in the 8th, Sele was lifted for Lilliquist and that apparently angered HAL as he teed off on poor ole Derek. Brought it  to face the 2 lefties due up, the first roll was a 4-7. Single 1-10 and successful. Up stepped Harold Baines, who was allowed to bat despite just 1 automatic hit on his card. Yep, you know what he got. Next 2 batters doubled off of Lilliquist's card and suddenly it was 10-4. Lilliquist got one more out before Ryan came on to finish the inning. Ryan allowed 2 hits and a run in the 9th to  make the final a more respectable 10-5. game 2: Nothing respectable about this one as the O's found their loaded column early and often. Joe Hesketh was left in to take the brunt of it and eat innings for a bullpen that doesn't have a lot of inning for any one pitcher. (had darwin been active he would have come in earlier).  Hesketh pitched 6 innings and his line was 4-4-3-0-4-1. That is runs allowed as he spun a masterful 20 hitter. The O's got 6 doubles and 2 homers. Most of the doubles came on 5-8 and 5-9 rolls and the rest of the xbh came from the 3 columns. The top 5 in the O's lineup did the damage as they went 17-26 and score 15 of the 16 runs while driving in all 16. Hoiles was one of 3 O's with 4 hits and he drove in 6. The one bright spot for Boston was a 3 run homer by Naehring. O's won easily 16-4. game 3: Saberhagen and Mussina matched up and you knew that the offense was going to be held in check in this one. Brunansky and Anderson traded early bp homers and this one went to extras knotted at 1. That puts Saberhagen right where expected, allowing more homers than walks for the year.  Greenwell opened the 10th with a hr 1-9 double chance and got... nothing. Split of 11 and, to add injury to insult, he was robbed of the double. Berryhill followed with a single before out #2 of the inning. Naehring stepped up and drew a 3 on his hr chance..too bad it was only a 1-2 chance but he settled for a double. With the runner only 1-9, the 3rd base coach wisely held him up. Cooper then sent a dribbler in the hole at 2b that Biggio could not catch up with (x play single) and the Sox had a 2-1 lead . Mo Vaughn then launched a 3 run homer to make the final score 5-1. Going back to game 2 and the 3 O's that had 4 hits each. No Boston player had more than 3 hits in the series yet in one game. Of the 12 Boston players to get hits, 11 of them had 2 or 3 for the series. After week 1, Boston starters not named Hesketh allowed just 5 earned runs in 36 1/3 innings.
