Subject: Reds @ Cardinals
The Reds are in the process of rebounding from a dreadful 1993 season (mediocre talent, last-place luck) to where we were prior to that (first-place talent, last-place luck), despite missing more 1-16+ chances at split card hits in the series than most teams will all season. Overwhelming the not-so-cozy confines of spacious Busch Stadium, the Reds have vaulted to the temporary major league lead in home runs, averaging 3 per game.... Game 1: The teams combined for 25 hits, 11 of them for extra bases, but not many runs were scored. The main reason for that was 11 Cincy LOB (7 of them in scoring position). We broke on top right away when Bret Boone was hit by the first pitch of the year and 3 batters later Kevin Mitchell launched his first of 50+ home runs this season to make the score 3-0. Erik Hanson, in his CIN debut, behaved like a typical Cincy starter and let the lead nearly evaporate, but back-to-back doubles in the 6th added an insurance run to make the score 4-2 at that point. Hanson fared reasonably well on the mound all in all, permitting just 8 baserunners and 2 runs in 7 IP. Closer Jeff Brantley got the save but pitched just as horribly as he did throughout 1993 (1 IP, .800 slugging percentage allowed today), turning a 2-run lead into a 1-run win. Final score: 4-3. ======================================================= Game 2: Five Cincy home runs today, three of them in our 10-run second inning, were too much for the Cardinals and the Reds were able to hang on for a 13-6 win. Felix Jose led the attack with a pair of round-trippers and 5 RBI. Starting pitcher Jose Rijo fooled almost nobody out there (5.1 IP, 11 hits, 3 walks, 5 runs) but was not quite able to choke away the 12-0 lead he was given. SLN starter Mike Moore was the primary victim of the onslaught, allowing 8 baserunners (all of which scored) in 1.1 IP. ======================================================= Game 3: Kevin Mitchell notched home runs #3 and #4 (5 RBI) and Kevin Gross tossed a complete game 4-hitter as the Reds completed the season-opening sweep with an 8-1 victory. Gross walked 3 and fanned 9 St. Louis batters. Allen Watson (4.1 IP, 7 runs, 3 gophers) took the loss for the Cardinals. The series was extraordinarily well-played in the field, with the teams combining to convert 39 of 40 x-plays (97.5%); the Reds were 18 for 18 in a performance that surely will never be repeated. Kevin Mitchell's slugging percentage stands at 1.917 for the moment. The unlikely hitting star for the Redbirds was fading shortstop Ozzie Smith, who batted .364 with a home run and drove in 4 of the Cards' 10 runs.
