Subject: Blue Jays @ Twins

The team with the most underachieving offense in the major leagues after one week of play in the supposedly-offensive 1994 season went into the HomerDome for 3 games, which proved to be exactly the tonic the doctor ordered.  Toronto pitchers had their hands full with the Minnesota offense, but managed to perform just well enough to win....

Game 1: MNA starter Scott Erickson faced 11 batters and 9 of them reached base as the Jays built an early 8-0 lead.  Todd Stottlemyre dodged almost all of the bullets that came at him (and there were many), getting some help from Woody Williams to seal up the 12-2 win.  Toronto's 17-hit attack contained 5 doubles and 2 home runs, while the Twins put up 10 hits and 16 total bases.

Toronto's pair of Joes in the outfield combined for a 10 5 7 6 line with 3 doubles and a homer.

Game 2: Jim Abbott was given quick leads of 4-0 and 5-1, then Minnesota chipped away and got to within 5-4 -- but no closer.  Final score: 6-4.  A couple of players notched their first major league homers today: powerful Jeff Reboulet of the Twins, and some Toronto weakling named Carlos Delgado (who hit 2).

MNA starter Pat Mahomes put up 4 scoreless innings after our 5 early runs, but Delgado's second round tripper off of reliever Rich Rodriguez provided some valuable late insurance.  Darren Hall faced one batter in the bottom of the 9th, getting Kirby Puckett (as the tying run) to pop up to end the game, thus earning his first career save.

=========================================================

Game 3: A typical 1994-type game in which the Jays again scored early (7-1 lead after 3) and often (then tacked on 8 more runs in the 6th).  Juan Guzman and Woody Williams took that as their cue to implode, and they gave 7 runs right back in the bottom of the frame, an inning which featured a Grand Slam for each team.

Williams entered with the bases loaded and 1 out, and required just 2 pitches to gopher up Shane Mack's Grand Salami.  Rotation starter Bobby Munoz promptly took over and wasn't overly pretty out there, but got the job done with a 3.2 IP stint that saved the 16-9 win.

The Toronto offense was led by a player who homered twice and probably set a team record with 8 RBI.  As you surely must have guessed, that player was.... Dick Schofield.

The Jays have now outscored our opponents by a solid 54-40 margin in 9 games, but sport only a 5-4 record due to zero ability to win the close ones (the games more likely to be decided by luck).

Alan
