Subject: Blue Jays @ White Sox

After basically forfeiting the opener, the Blue Jays actually showed up for the final two contests....

Game 1: Three unearned runs allowed on just 1 error, three timely rally-killing DPs to go with the 4 hits we got all day.  The Sox had a 2-0 lead 3 batters into the game, and it went downhill from there.  Final score: 6-1.  Julio Franco was the story for the home team by hitting for the cycle via a series of microscopic split cards.

Starters Jim Abbott and Wilson Alvarez had similar days -- up to a point.  Alvarez allowed 8 baserunners in 6.1 IP, Abbott 7 in 6 IP.  Five of Abbott's scored, none of Alvarez's did.  A typical Blue Jay choking performance, both in the field and at the plate.

============================================================

Game 2: Juan Guzman was battered as usual, but somehow all of the battering was singles (when he wasn't busy walking everyone in the house).  The TOA offense against Alex Fernandez was mostly confined to the second inning, when we got a pair of homers (both solo) and Robbie Alomar delivered a 2-out double which made the score 4-1 after we had donated anther unearned run in the CHA 1st.

Guzman dodged most of the bullets after that but bled away a good chunk of the lead while our offense shut down too.  But the TOA pen got the job done and the visitors were able to hold on for a 5-3 win.  John Olerud doubled & homered to lead the 11-hit attack.

============================================================

Game 3: The Jeff Tabaka Gambit (9R lefty vs. nearly all-righty lineup) should have succeeded, as much as HAL had our RHB roll on his empty card.  But right away a couple of lefties did too, with the Jays hitting for the cycle in the first inning and taking a quick 4-0 lead.

Two batters into the bottom of the frame, TOA starter Pat Hentgen had retired nobody and the 4-0 lead was 4-2 in the blink of an eye.  Both pitchers recovered from their early jitters however, and it took until the 6th inning for Toronto to rap out a few more extra base hits and put 3 additional runs on the board.

One inning later Hentgen took his cue to implode and coughed up 2 more gophers in the space of 3 batters before being yanked.  Woody Williams took it the rest of the way, giving up several hits but no runs.  Final score: 9-4.  Chris James stuck to rolling mostly on his own card and had a big day at the plate, 3 2 3 3 with a 2B and HR.

Toronto averaged nearly 2 bases per hit today (12 hits, 22 TB) and Chicago did even better (7 hits, 17 TB) as Hentgen was repeatedly mauled by gophers.

Alan
