Subject: Reds @ Rockies

Cincy sweeps, except for that game in the middle where we choked in the age-old manner that we have perfected and patented.  The Reds will have a lot of baserunners this year, and therefore have an excellent chance of leading the majors in two categories which may appear to be diametrically opposed --  LOB (especially in scoring position) and GIDP -- but I believe we can do it....

Game 1: Erik Hanson was anything but unhittable (6.1 IP, 11 hits, 100% singles and no walks) but he took a 3-0 shutout into the seventh inning when 4 straight singles suddenly reduced the Cincy lead to 3-2.  Reliever Chuck McElroy choked up the RBI hit to a LHB he was supposed to retire, but fortunately Todd Jones in fact retired all 8 batters he was supposed to and the Reds escaped with an 8-2 win after tacking on 5 unearned insurance runs in the 8th.

Ex-Red Johnny Ruffin was the victim of the sabotage, which started when pitcher Jones reached on a PB+K with 2 outs and nobody on base.  Earlier in the contest, Colorado catcher Joe Girardi had committed the rarely-seen catcher's interference error as well.

CIN CF Reggie Sanders had 3 hits & 4 RBI, lacking only a double in his attempt to hit for the cycle.

================================================================

Game 2: Spot starter John Roper had an unlikely outing, and like Hanson before him took a 3-0 shutout into the 7th inning.  Unlike Hanson, Roper did not hemorrhage up any runs at all because his manager had a rare flash of competency and got him the hell out of there before it could happen.

That move, therefore, left it to the Cincy Arson Squad and today's culprit, Hector Carrasco.  The rookie arsonist choked up 4 late runs to blow the entire lead and more.  Sanders tied it in the 9th but the Reds LOBbed the bases loaded.

The contest proceeded to the 12th, and the Reds managed only 1 baserunner in overtime, that being erased by our FOURTH timely GIDP of the day -- and we still stranded 11 despite all those critical rally-killers.

Seconds later, leading off the CON 12th, Eric Young smashed Colorado's third gopher of the day and the game was over.  Final score: 5-4.  Jeff Brantley, starting his 4th inning of relief, took the loss and combined with the other gasmen to waste the best start John Roper is ever going to have.

================================================================

Game 3: Jose Rijo has been mercilessly abused by HAL so far in 1994, and today wasn't a lot different (9 hits, 15 total bases) but his teammates got him enough runs in one inning -- and then shut down the offense *completely* -- for Rijo to cruise to a 7-2 win.

The Reds got all 7 runs via a 7-hit second inning that vanquished Rockies starter Wally Whitehurst.  Four relievers then combined to permit 0 runs over the final 7.2 innings.

For usage reasons, this was almost a Kevin Mitchell-free series; he appeared only for half of game 2 and did nothing aside from donating a blown-x double which amazingly didn't result in a run.

Alan
