Subject: Blue Jays @ Royals

The Jays visited the first-place Royals and had the better of it before winding up on the wrong end of the scalpel in the finale.  Things are going well on the road in 1994 for Toronto, who should at the very least be in the thick of the wild card race, and we look forward to eventually getting our first break of the year in a home series, and maybe even winning one of those someday....

Game 1: Bobby Munoz, Toronto's #1 pick, has been anything but worthy of that lofty status so far in 1994 and a month into the season he was still seeking win #1.  It looked as if he would finally get that first win with ease when his teammates, who had not been scoring for Munoz, gave him a 4-0 lead after half an inning.  The score was 4-4 after 1 full inning.

The Jays immediately tacked on 3 more runs off of K.C. starter Flash Gordon, and Munoz was at long last able to execute the Heimlich Maneuver and cease choking all over the place; he put zeroes on the board the rest of the way and Jesse Orosco took care of the 9th inning after Munoz went off the rails to start it.  But by that time we had a 7-run lead anyway.  Final score: 11-4.  Paul Molitor scored 5 times and John Olerud drove in 4.

===============================================================================

Game 2: Mark Gubicza, whose season has been miserable so far, saved his very best for the Blue Jays and held us to 1 run in 6 innings and put the feeble TOA offense well on the way to a 10-LOB day (most of them RISP).  Pat Hentgen, meanwhile, was facing lots of bullets, not always dodging them with success, and he trailed 3-1 after 7 innings.

Vince Coleman in particular had a spectacularly surgical day at the plate for the Royals, getting 3 hits in almost entirely empty columns, but his magic wore off and he ended up helping the Jays to our 5-3 comeback win.

In the TOA 8th, Molitor tripled and waltzed home when reliever Mike Magnante's first pitch of the day eluded catcher Mike MacFarlane.  With 2 outs Joe Carter drew a walk, only his 4th unintentional free pass of the season, and Ed Sprague came through with a double to right.  Coleman's throw not only didn't get Carter, it also eluded MacFarlane and Sprague circled the bases.  Two batters later, a Pat Borders triple (!) plated the final run of the day.

Hentgen finished what he started, scattering 10 hits (9 singles, 1 double), walking 3 and fanning 8.

===============================================================================

Game 3: David Cone didn't need anywhere hear the amount of good fortune he and his team received today, as the Toronto LOB, GIDP and Keystone Cops Act kept the home crowd laughing all the way home.  Final score: 8-2.

Cone combined with John Dopson on a 6-hitter with 5 walks, as the Jays stranded 9 and hit into 2 timely rally-killing DPs.  Todd Stottlemyre pitched about as well as Hentgen had, and also finished what he started, but that was more in the nature of "taking one for the team" as opposed to delivering any kind of quality pitching.

Already losing 4-1 in the 5th, Stottlemyre watched as half of his infield blew consecutive x-plays which kept the inning alive so that -- with 2 outs of course -- he could cough up a 100% unearned Grand Slam to seal the defeat.

Scott Leius was the hero for the Royals, with that Salami contributing to a 3-hit, 5-RBI day.

Alan
