Subject: Reds @ Expos

The (distant) second-most talented team in the N.L. visits the most talented team in the N.L.  How did it go?  You need a lot of breaks to beat the Expos; the Reds rarely get any breaks.  You do the math....

Game 1: CIN #5 starter John Roper had his second very good start of the season, but just like his first one he came away with squat to show for it.  Roper allowed 4 hits in 6 IP, walked 0 and fanned 6.  He made one bad pitch, Larry Walker's solo gopher in the 2nd inning.  Final score: 1-0.

Ken Hill completed a 6-hitter, walking just 1 and striking out 10 hapless Cincy batters.  After his masterpiece, Hill's record stands at 4-0 with a 2.21 ERA; Roper is 0-1 -- with a better ERA than Hill.

================================================================

Game 2: Neither John Smiley nor Pedro Martinez were as sharp as yesterday's starters had been, but they still performed well at first and the Reds held a 1-0 lead into the 6th inning.  It was at that point HAL's trusty scalpel came out, and affected both pitchers.

The Reds were dismembered first, as Smiley coughed up 4 straight hits and reliever Todd Jones extended the rally to 5 in a row, giving the home team a 3-1 lead.  But Martinez gave up a run half an inning later and Mel Rojas permitted 3 more (2 of them Pedro's) and the Reds were back on top by the count of 5-3.

Choke attempt #1 having been aborted, the Cincy bullpen rolled up its sleeves and went back to work.  A solo gopher in the 7th made it 5-4, an RBI single in the 8th tied the game, and MON's third gopher of the day leading off the 9th ended it.  Final score: 6-5, another 1-run choke with Jeff Brantley doing the honors.

================================================================

Game 3: Having lost a couple of close ones, the Reds tried something different -- like not showing up at all.  From the 2nd inning through the end of the game today's score was 0-0, but a timely blown-x play by the Cincy defense in the bottom of the first set the stage for yet another costly gopher.  Final score: 4-0.

Erik Hanson recovered (4.2 IP, 0 runs) after that assault and Tom Browning added 3 scoreless relief innings, but the damage was done in the first third of an inning, and the totally unconscious Cincinnati offense managed just 2 singles and no other baserunners against lefty Jeff Fassero.

The contest began well enough when Felix Jose opened it with a hit, but 26 of the next 27 CIN batters would be retired effortlessly.

Alan
