Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees

A team with moderate talent and no luck at all met a team with superior talent and FAR superior luck.  At least we managed somehow not to get swept....

Game 1: The final score, 8-4, looks lopsided due to one 6-run inning where Pat Hentgen was brutally dismembered during surgery, but he soldiered on anyway and "took one for the team".  Hentgen's complete game helped the overworked and underachieving Toronto bullpen enjoy a day of rest.

The Jays took a quick 2-0 lead in the first before resuming our usual miserable routine.  In the NYA 3rd, 5 straight batters reached base and 2 had scored because the only time we get a low split card is when our opponent is running the bases.  Then with 2 outs that should have been three or four, another ultra-fortuitous split cleared the bases via a Dave Clark Grand Slam and effectively ended the game.

The remainder of the contest unraveled around events such as a 4e48 at SS for New York making one spectacular play after another, low percentage baserunning chances meeting easy success for the home team while our one (90%) chance drew -- of course -- a 20.

Toronto accumulated both more hits and more total bases than the Yankees, but our typical misfortune turned what should have been a close win into a not-very-close defeat.

==============================================================

Game 2: Juan Guzman gave the fatigued Arson Squad a second day to relax by tossing a complete game in slightly more effective fashion than Hentgen had.  Toronto's pipsqueak offense once again outperformed the Murderers Row lineup of the Yankees, and today we actually got the result we deserved, a 4-2 win.

Though power was absent for both teams (16 combined hits: 14 singles & 2 doubles) all of those singles plus 10 free passes made for a lot of action on the bases despite the lack of runs.  Pat Borders, hitting in the #9 slot for the Blue Jays, delivered a couple of hits and 3 RBI.

==============================================================

Game 3: After one game that was close and another that should have been, the Jays naturally had to endure one ritual slaughter and that was today.  Todd Stottlemyre bled slowly (but messily) to death, spreading 8 runs over the better part of 7 innings, while the TOA offense made lefthanded mediocrity Sterling Hitchcock look like an All Star by seeing how often we could roll right next to a hit.  Final score: 8-3.

HAL had us roll 15 times (including the last 8 in a row) on Hitchcock's card during the 23 batters he faced, which should not necessarily have been a detriment but it was.

Six weeks into the season, Robbie Alomar finally connected for home run #1 but it was the only extra-base hit among the plethora (6) we had today and came, naturally, with nobody on base.  A 2-run single by Joe Carter in the 6th actually cut the deficit to a mere 3-2, but that was HAL's signal to dig the scalpel deeper into Toronto's luckless starting pitcher, and he wasted no time in doing so.

Toby Borland made the only appearance of the series for the Toronto bullpen, tossing 1.2 deceptively scoreless innings but his 2 quick walks (one of which forced in a run) made Stottlemyre's final jam even worse.

Alan
