One more weekly demonstration of what happens when a team with far superior talent runs into a team with far superior luck. The most underachieving team in the majors (outside of the team based in Ontario) continues to play dead, as the team with the best offense in the National League (outside of the team based in Quebec) makes three minor league pitchers look like All Stars.... Game 1: An 11-4 advantage in LOB, plus 2 timely rally-killing DPs, plus another runner gunned at the plate, plus one surgical inning for our fortunate opponent in which 6 runs were scored -- each and every one coming with 2 outs -- after a completely non-hitting pitcher doubled to start the rally. What more could you want? Reds choke, 8-3. Superstar Phil Leftwich went the distance in a 15-baserunner performance for the Mets, while CIN starter John Roper was victimized by the attack of ultra-surgical rolls and splits in the NYN 5th, the critical blow (aside from the double by the .000-hitting pitcher) being a gopher off the bat of slugging shortstop Jose Vizcaino. =========================================================== Game 2: Today's king-for-a-day who saved his best for the Reds was Brian Anderson and his (previously) 5.5 ERA. Tim Pugh made his season debut for the Reds and, like Roper before him, forfeited the lead and the ballgame during one surgical inning in which all the damage was done. A 3-run precise split card gopher followed a pair of free passes, and then monstrous underachiever John Smiley was tried in relief -- having utterly failed as a starter despite a good card -- and he failed at that too though his efforts spared us yet another 1-run loss. Reds choke, 4-2. Superstar Brian Anderson didn't even last 6 innings, but managed to strike out 10 hapless Cincy batters among the 17 outs he recorded and left the mound with nothing left to prove. =========================================================== Game 3: Today's king-for-a-day who saved his best for the Reds was Jason Jacome and his (previously) 11.25 ERA. This savvy veteran of one entire major league start against a much weaker offense than the Reds, combined his first complete game with his first victory. The totally non-hitting hurler also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and a critical RBI. Reds choke (and rack up league-leading 1-run loss #8 in the process), 3-2. Kevin Gross went the distance for the visitors in the losing effort, giving up all three runs with -- what else? -- 2 outs in an inning. The choke was completed in the bottom of the 8th on the final NYN clutch heroics of the day. A stat which, though seemingly trivial, nonetheless epitomizes the incredible lucklessness of the team which represents southwestern Ohio: after a fantastic 3 games to begin the 1994 season several eons ago, Kevin Mitchell has now completed a *fourth straight* road week of rolling not even ONE time in his loaded 2 column, the best column of any hitter in the majors. He'd find the lone out anyway, but it would be nice to see him at least give it a shot. Alan |
