Subject: Florida @ St. Louis
The Marlins were cruising until the 7th inning of the middle game. Momentum shifted, and the Cardinals had 2 home wins.
G1 FA acquisition Gar Finvold (7 4 1 0 2 2) and Robb Nen combined on a 5-hitter which allowed the Marlins to squeeze by in the opener. St.Louis actually scored first in the 2nd inning when Mark Whiten tripled and scored on the same play when Gary Sheffield threw wildly to 3rd base. Florida tied it in the 5th when on a rare occasion, Ozzie Smith couldn't turn Mark Dalesandro's FC grounder into an inning ending double play.
Sheffield scored from 3rd on the play. The game stayed tied, 1-1, until the 8th. Chuck Carr was the catalyst as he singled, stole 2nd, went to 3rd on an error by backup catcher Rich Rowland, and trotted home on a sac fly by Bret Barberie. The Marlins out-hit St.Louis, 8-5, and Florida's Jeff Conine and Kurt Abbott and the Cards' Mark Whiten each had 2 hits to lead their respective teams.
Final Score: Florida 2, St.Louis 1 WP- Finnvold 1-1, LP- Eversgerd 0-1, SV- Nen (6) HR- none
G2 As mentioned in the preview, Florida jumped out to a commanding 6-2 lead in the middle game after scoring 3 times in the
top of the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th, the tide turned in the series. With FA Claim Doug Brocail summoned from the bullpen, the Cardinals received a leadoff double from Delino Deshields, an RBI triple by Tim Salmon, and one out later, a 2-run homer by Kevin McReynolds. The Marlins held that slim 6-5 lead until the 9th. As happened so many times in the expansion season, Todd Worrell was unable to nail down the save. With one out, Salmon blasted a home run to tie the game and send it to extra innings. In the 10th inning, Ray Lankford stroked a leadoff single and one out later, Brian Jordan homered to send the jubilant hometown fans to the parking lot. Salmon had a huge game- going 4-for-5, and was a double shy of the cycle. For the Marlins, Jeff Conine got his team off to a strong beginning with a leadoff homer to start the game.
Final Score: St.Louis 8, Florida 6, 10 innings WP- Stanton 1-0, LP- Worrell 3-1 HR- Conine (9), Wallach (15), McReynolds (1), Salmon (7), Jordan (2)
G3 The Cards got off to a big start in the finale by scoring 4 times in the first 3 innings. St. Louis tacked on 3 runs over the next 5 innings to seal the deal and take the series. Gary Gaetti was the hitting star for the Cardinals. The veteran third-baseman hit a 2-run blast in the 2nd, walked in the 3rd inning, lofted a sac fly in the 5th, and stroked a 2-run single in the 7th inning to account for 5 RBI in the game. In a rare start, John Vander Wal had 2 doubles
and an RBI in 3 AB for the Fish.
