Subject: Blue Jays @ Tigers
The Jays complete games 4, 5 and 6 in a row against the much-maligned Detroit pitching staff, and we simply can't figure out what all the maligning is about. Detroit's ERA vs. Toronto is now a microscopic 1.31 in 55 IP; against the other 10 A.L. teams the figures are 7.02 in 295 IP. Never underestimate the awesome power of that good old Blue Jay black magic.... Game 1: Pat Hentgen and Jesse Orosco combined on a 4-hitter, 85.7% of our hits went for extra bases (4 doubles, 2 homers) and we still had to hang on for dear life to get a hard-earned 4-2 win. DEA starter Bill "Bombs Away" Gullickson allowed nearly 6 runs per game in his first 6 starts against non-Toronto opponents; in his last two starts -- both against you-know-who -- he's permitted 1 earned run in 13.2 IP. Two Detroit errors gave us an unearned run in the first, but a surgical split card gopher neutralized that lead a few batters later. A couple of solo homers in the late innings and an RBI double by Pat Borders put 3 runs on the board for the Jays, and we only gave 1 back. =============================================================================== Game 2: Three gopher bites proved fatal to Todd Stottlemyre today, two of them coming in particularly demoralizing fashion just seconds after the Toronto offense had scored. Ex-Jay David Wells had his second consecutive quality start against his old mates, lowering his ERA by 1.5 runs in the process, and it now stands at a slender 6.31. Wells obviously has a card that is much better than his stats, at least you can't blame the Blue Jays -- and HAL -- for thinking so. He had the TOA batters roll on it 18 times among the 26 batters Wells faced today and 13 of them made outs. Toronto outhit the Tigers 8-7, but all the split card home runs we missed as opposed to the ones they got, added up to another costly defeat for the Jays. =============================================================================== Game 3: DEA starter Vicente Palacios saved his very best for the Jays (7 IP, 0 ER) but the pair of unearned runs he contributed himself helped Toronto to prevail by the score of 3-1. In a bit of a role reversal, Luckless Jim Abbott saved *his* best for the Detroit batters and gave them just 1 run in 7 IP. Darren Hall earned his 6th save with 2 hitless relief innings. Palacios's own error in the top of the second was followed later by a pair of run-scoring singles, and that margin held up until a Tony Phillips solo gopher on Abbott's first pitch of the 8th halved the lead and sent Abbott to the showers. Back to back doubles in the 9th added an insurance run. Detroit's offense managed just 16 hits in the series but their suddenly outstanding pitchers only allowed 21. Alan |
