Subject: Montreal at Chicago Week 3
Expos relief ace Jack Aker serves up lunch meat in first two Expo losses. Cubs return favor in game three with Expos overcoming 5-0 deficit in 9th inning for 6-5 victory. Cubs win two of three. Game 1 Right fielder Joe Pepitone had 2 base hits at Wrigley Field as the Chicago NL Cubs pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Montreal Expos by the count of 5 to 4. Chicago NL had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 3 hits. Curt Blefary started the inning off right when he laced a one-base hit. Pepitone was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Glenn Beckert then doubled plating a run. Graig Nettles came up and he stroked a base-hit giving Chicago NL the victory as 45,431 happy fans celebrated wildly. Chicago NL had a total of 11 hits for the game. The winning pitcher was Woodie Fryman(1-1) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning. The loss was charged to Jack Aker(0-1) in relief. Tony Soprano was in great spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when asked about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Steve Bivens, feels right now - and it's not very good. It's terrible when you come up on the short end of one of these!' Game 2 Cesar Gutierrez had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Wrigley Field as the Chicago NL Cubs pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Montreal Expos by the count of 7 to 6. Chicago NL won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Glenn Beckert opened up the inning nicely when he lined a single. Joe Pepitone stepped up to the plate and he doubled. After an out was recorded, Curt Blefary stepped in and he slapped a one-base hit resulting in a run. John Mayberry came up and he drew a walk to load the bases. Tim McCarver stepped into the box and laced a base-hit making Chicago NL victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times. Vicente Romo(3-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. The losing pitcher was Jack Aker(0-2) in relief. He surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk in 1 and 1/3 innings. Game 3 In a dramatic ending the Montreal Expos staged a comeback and held on to win over the Chicago NL Cubs by the count of 6 to 5. Montreal came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 6 runners on 7 hits. The big moment was provided by Ron Fairly who helped quiet the crowd when he rifled a three-run blast (his 1st of the season). Montreal had 11 hits for the game and Chicago NL had 7. The win went to Mike Marshall(2-0) who allowed 2 runs in 1 inning. Marshall got relief help from Howie Reed who gained credit for his 1st save. Dick Selma(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in 1 inning. Tony Soprano was not very talkative after his team's tough loss. 'I'm not in the mood for questions, but I'm sure Steve Bivens will be glad to talk about the game as long as you have questions to ask.' (What's wrong Tony? Doesn't feel too good to be on the other end of the stick, does it?) |
