The Reds pitch well and benefit from Marlin errors in the opener to take the series, 2-1.
G1 The Reds jumped out with 2-run innings in both the 1st and 3rd innings, but it helped that SS Kurt Abbott committed an error in both of those rallies. Although Bobby Witt pitched poorly (2 1/3 5 4 1 0 5), with no walks and 5 K, he should've saved the bullpen from pitching a few more innings. Meanwhile Kevin Gross (9.3 H/9 actual, 7.1 in Smiley) continued his early run at a Cy Young award. The righty cruised (8 4 1 1 0 6) through his 8 innings, and lowered his season ERAto 2.20. The Reds' Felix Jose hit a 2-run single in the 1st that ended up being the GW RBI, and he finished 2-for-3 with a walk on the night.
Final Score: Cincinnati 5, Florida 1 WP- Gross 6-2, LP- Witt 1-5 HR- Conine (10)
G2 Florida's Gar Finnvold amazed Cincinnati fans as he took a perfect game into the 6th inning before allowing a leadoff-single to Tony Fernandez. Finnvold (6 1 0 0 0 4) lowered his season ERA to 4.50 before turning the game over to the Marlins' bullpen. Ed Taubensee added a single in the 9th, but the Reds sent the minimum 27 hitters to the plate as both Fernandez and Taubensee were erased on the base paths (1 CS and 1 GIDP). Meanwhile, Manny Lee's 2nd inning RBI singleand Orestes Destrade's 2-run homer in the 8th were all that Florida needed. The Marlins' 11 hit-day was led by Bret Barberie's 3 knocks.
Final Score: Florida 3, Cincinnati 0 WP- Finnvold 3-1, LP- Rijo 5-4, SV- Nen (8) HR- Destrade (3)
G3 For the 3rd straight game, the winning side got a great performance by its starting pitcher. This time Cincinnati's John Smiley (9 4 1 1 0 9) threw a complete game masterpiece to lower his unsightly ERA to 5.04. The Reds' lineup came back with a vengeance with 13 hits and 7 runs (including 5 in the first 4 innings). This game was never in doubt as Smiley kept setting down the Marlins with ease. Kevin Mitchell vied for player-of-the-game honors as his at bats went as follows: 1st inning- RBI single, 3rd inning- SacFly RBI, 4th inning- 2-RBI single, 6th inning- BB, 8th inning- 2-run homer. Mitchell finished 3-for-3 with 6 of the team's 7 RBI on the night.
Final Score: Cincinnati 7, Florida 1 WP- Smiley 3-3, LP- Leiter 2-3 HR- Mitchell (18)
