Sox manage to take 2 of 3 despite the splits and rolls going against them most of the series
game 1: Sac flies in the 2nd and 3rd put the Sox up 2-0 before Phillips hit a solo homer in the 3rd to cut the lead in half. In the 6th Boston used 5 singles to score 4 times. The last was a clutch 2 run single by Tinsley, Boston's first of the season. That turned out to be a big hit as Fernandez left after 7 innings with a 6-1 lead. Ken Ryan came on and was brutalized. Walk, wp, ground out, double,double, hr and it was 6-5 before he settled down and got the last 2 outs. Henke pitched a 1-2-3 9th to save the 6-5 win.
game 2: Detroit has struggled against lefties all year and that continued for most of today. Webster doubled in a run in the 5th but Berryhill got Boston's 1 successful bp hr of the series in the 6th to tie it. Combined with Fernandez's 7 innings in game 1, Detroit had but 2 runs in 13 innings off of lefties.. That was until the 7th. After an out, Kirby made a 2 base error in left field that opened the flood gates. Walk,2b,2b,1b and Detroit had tripled their runs for the series. Cooper had an rbi single in 8th and Fielder a bp homer in the bottom of the inning to complete the 6-2 Tiger win. Both starting pitchers had basically the same card. Hits on 5-8 and 5-9. The last 2 Sox batters in the 7th rolled 5-10 and 5-9. Too bad the 5-9 came after a pitching change. The Tigers 2 2b's in their big inning? Of course, a 5-8 and a 5-9.
game 3: A see-saw affair early. Chris Haney made an emergency start as a backward lefty to try to take advantage of the Tigers weakness. The D (mainly the splits) didn't help him much. Walk,wp, 2b got the Tigers on the board in the 1st but Boston came right back with an unearned run in the 2nd on 2 walks and a 2 base error. In the 3rd, Cooper missed a bp homer (1-15) and Vaughn and Greenwell settled for triples after missing hr chances in a 3 run inning. With 2 out in the bottom of the inning Fryman had no trouble getting a 3 run bp homer (split of 5). In the 4th, a double and 2 walks loaded the bases for Cooper. Another bp hr chance...another miss. At least it was a sac fly to give Boston the lead. Cuyler walked stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on a sac fly to tie it back up. In the 5th, a walk, single+error and wild pitch gave Boston a 2 run lead. Naehring added an rbi single in the 6th to make it 8-5. Haney left after 6 innings and Bankhead tossed a scoreless 7th before Ryan came on for the 8th and had troubles just like game 1. After an out, 2 singles and a walk loaded the bases. 1 run scored on a grounder before Fielder struck out to end the inning. Henke issued a walk in the 9th but got his 12th save. For the game, Boston had more walks (9) and strikeouts (11) than hits (8). In addition to the bp homer, 4 of the Tigers other hits were x play hits as the Tigers continually drew the low splits while Boston drew mainly double digits.
