Subject: Blue Jays @ A's

The Jays continue to do what we do best: lose games that we should win.  Things were so dismal this week that all 3 Oakland starting pitchers in this series barely broke a sweat and were able to work 9 innings -- or more -- against the massively talented but massively underachieving Toronto offense, and only a brief sequence of defensive misplays by the A's in the series finale kept them from sweeping the unluckiest team in the majors....

Game 1: Luckless Jim Abbott and woefully inept Ron Darling tossed dueling complete games with Darling -- but of course! -- saving his best outing of the 1994 season for the Blue Jays and lowering his 6.46 ERA.  Still, the teams were exactly identical today in the categories of hits, singles, doubles, home runs and walks drawn.

Therefore it came down to clutch performance (uh oh), and the Jays LOBbed 10 while still finding time to hit into a pair of rally-killing DPs.  Final score: 3-1.  The unearned run we immediately donated in the first inning was demoralizing, but turned out to be significant only in that it separated us from another 1-run defeat.

=======================================================

Game 2: Another in an endless line of batting practice pitchers who just happen to come up with Hall of Fame type outings when Toronto comes to town.  Today's superhero was Shawn Boskie, who entered the contest with a well-deserved 6.95 ERA in 9 GS so far in 1994.  But in this contest he had a start worthy of Cy Young or Iron Man McGinnity himself: 10.2 IP with just 7 hits and 1 run permitted.

The Jays helped Cy Boskie by racking up another boatload of LOB (13), though we did get on the scoreboard first in the 4th when lead-footed John Olerud lumbered home from first base on Dick Schofield's double.  Toronto starter Bobby Munoz registered another quality start (6.2 IP, 1 run) and as usual came away with bupkis to show for it.

Munoz's shutout vanished when scrap heap scrub pinch-hitter Trent Hubbard found his loaded HR column and surely wasn't about to miss, considering who his opponent was.

The game meandered into extra innings and the visitors had an excellent chance to go ahead when Ed Sprague doubled with 0 outs and moved to third on Schofield's sac bunt.  But Sprague was nailed at the plate (and wasn't done being the goat yet either) on a perfectly timed gb(B) fielders choice.  The man who hit the non-RBI grounder then tried to steal second with a 95% chance of success -- and actually got the jump!  Guess what split card he drew.

Seconds later, the A's had runners at the corners with 1 out, as two batters in a row got the exact same dice roll and surgically found the one and only hit in Toby Borland's 5 column.  The next batter hit the ball to Sprague.  He neither booted it, let it get past him, nor threw it away.

But he also didn't try for the inning-ending DP, and he didn't try to nail the runner at the plate.  He calmly adjusted his goat horns then lobbed the ball to first as the losing run waltzed home.  Jays choke again, 2-1 in 'lucky 13' innings.

=======================================================

Game 3: Facing extremely backwards mediocre lefty Bill Krueger, HAL naturally limited us to rolling exclusively on his card or finding the few empty columns on our own cards for 9 innings.  That typically diabolical strategy against the Blue Jays would surely have succeeded except for 3 blown x plays (4 if you include a 'runner-held' single) in the TOA 5th, though all runs were listed as being earned.

Juan Guzman went the distance and prevailed by the score of 6-2, thus barely averting the sweep.  Guzman tossed a 6-hitter, all singles, and issued just 2 free passes.

Devon White had a huge day, going 3 for 5 (2 doubles and a home run), scoring 3 times and driving in 3 runs as his batting average skyrocketed to .206.  Lefty-killing catcher Randy Knorr continues to hit in the worst of luck -- even by miserable Blue Jay standards -- with Knorr's 0 for 4 collar today reducing him to an anemic .119 average.
