Subject: Reds @ Cardinals

A real heart-attack of a series: the Reds tried in the worst way to give
away three games, but only managed to drop one. Cincy made 8 errors in the
series (half by Eddie "The Human Error Machine" Leon) to 2 for St. Louis,
and the Cards, like all Cincy opponents always do, immediately capitalized
to the tune of TEN UNEARNED RUNS in the four games, which has to be a SMILEY
record for a series.

Game 1: The Reds outhit the Cards 8 to 4, and had Tom Terrific on the mound,
so this was an easy victory, right? Wrong. St. Louis won 4-3 thanks to 3
unearned runs, all of which scored on a clutch home run by Joe Torre in the
fifth inning, long after the third out was supposed to have been recorded.
Cincinnati eventually tied the score off of Steve Carlton, but a leadoff
homer by Dick Allen in the eighth (an earned run!) completed the scoring.

Carlton uncorked two wild pitches, and Ted Simmons was charged with a passed
ball on another occasion, but the Reds could only manage one unearned run
from all that generosity. Bobby Tolan provided the offense for the Reds,
leading off the game with his first homer of 1970, and collecting 3 hits and
scoring 2 runs on the day.

Game 2: The Reds batters liked what they saw of St. Louis starter Wade
Blasingame. Five consecutive batters reached base to begin the game and
four of them managed to score. The Blazer would continue for 5 innings, but
allowed 11 hits (all singles). The Reds would tally 15 hits, commit zero
errors, and win 7-3, with Jack Billingham getting the victory in his first
start of 1970.

Against massive odds, all runs for both teams were earned. Pete Rose went 4
for 5 to raise his average to .415. Joe Torre went 2 for 3 with a double,
and is now hitting .418.

Game 3: Cincy built a 5-1 lead after 7 innings, and Gary Nolan was cruising
to what appeared to be an easy victory when the wheels came off the wagon
yet again.

In the eighth, Tony Cloninger entered the game for the Reds, at which point
the St. Louis batters came to life, the Reds "defenders" began throwing the
ball away (2 more errors; 2 more unearned runs), and Clay Carroll had to
rush to the scene and get Joe Torre to hit into an inning-ending DP, or the
Cards would undoubtedly still be batting.

The Reds held on to win 5-4, and (defense aside) it wouldn't have been that
close if Cincy could have bought a clutch hit somewhere (10 LOB to 5 for St.
Louis).

Game 4: A really ugly one and another near-catastrophe for the Reds. Jim
McGlothlin opposed Bob Gibson and both starters were brutal. St. Louis was
up 5-1 after 3, and then Gibson went to pieces (Gibson has had several bad
games against Cincy over the years; he's the only big-name pitcher whose
luck is worse than ours, apparently).

Gibson began the Reds fourth by nailing Bobby Tolan with a fastball. Four
batters later, Pete Rose's grand slam tied the game. Gibby left after the
fourth, trailing 6-5, and Cincinnati abused reliever Nellie Briles for 4
more runs on the way to a 10-5 lead in the eighth.

Game over, eh? Of course, it's never THAT easy. The Reds used 4 pitchers
and committed 2 errors in St. Louis' 3-run eighth. The final score was
10-8, or rather 10-3 if only earned runs are counted.

Alan
