Subject: Blue Jays @ Rangers
After one surgical inning containing a critical unearned run did in the Jays in the opener, the team which can't purchase a win in a home game returned to their Road Warrior ways and rebounded to take the final 2 contests. Perhaps the squad was inspired by rumors -- not yet confirmed -- that a management shake-up is imminent. Clutch hitting alert: Toronto scored 19 runs in this series, precisely zero of them coming after 2 were out in an inning. Also, the talented (but overworked and underachieving) Blue Jay bullpen was given the entire series off.... ====================================================================================== Game 1: With 2 outs and the bases empty in the TEA 4th, Will Clark rolled a 99% empty column but found the HBP way down there on a roll of 12. Jeff Frye then rolled a 99% empty column but found a free pass way up there on a roll of 2. Of course the next batter doubled and Gold Glove OF Devon White threw the ball away to hand Texas a run, and to ensure that the doubler would score easily from third when the next batter inevitably got another hit. As is typical for the Jays, one mistake proved fatal as we took an unearned 3-2 loss. This week's Overachieving Opponent Starter (O.O.S.) was Shane Reynolds, who scattered 8 hits, walked nobody and fanned 8 disinterested Toronto batters. The Jays' best threat came with the score 3-2 in the 8th when we got runners to 1st & 3rd with just 1 out. Naturally the next batter couldn't even deliver a sac fly, and the threat was terminated by reliever Al Pena who got Chris Sabo to leave the bases loaded. ====================================================================================== Game 2: TEA starter Rick Helling was a prime candidate for the O.O.S. award since he arrived on the mound with a 9+ ERA and a wee bit of a problem getting lefties out. But Helling didn't give himself much of a chance today, hanging around to face only 10 batters. Five of them reached base and 4 scored to give Jim Abbott an early lead. Another high-ERA pitcher (Hector Fajardo) shut down the Jays with 4.1 IP in which he permitted 0 earned runs and the contest remained 4-0 through 6 innings. Knowing that a mere 4-run lead is highly precarious for this team, the TOA offense woke up and tacked on 8 late markers. Final score: 12-1. Abbott took a 2-hitter (!) into the 9th inning against a formidable Texas lineup before being assaulted by 3 fortuitous split cards and seeing his shutout ruined. In 39 starts as a member of the Blue Jays Abbott has yet to record a shutout, but this was his 3rd complete game victory in which he permitted just 1 run (the other 2 came very early in 1993). ====================================================================================== Game 3: Three consecutive 2 out (what else?) hits put Texas on top 2-0 in the 2nd, and seconds after the Jays halved that deficit Albert Belle's leadoff gopher in the third put it back where it was. TEA starter Kevin Brown and TOA's massively underachieving Pat Hentgen then combined to allow practically no baserunners for a while, until Joe Carter homered leading off the 7th to cut the Ranger lead to 3-2. When Ed Sprague followed with a single, Brown was abruptly removed and replaced by Matt Whiteside; a move that greatly pleased the visiting batters. Four hits in a row with still nobody out plated 3 runs before we charitably LOBbed the bases loaded yet again, and Hentgen stayed tough by escaping a jam in the 8th and retiring the last 6 batters of the contest. Final score: 5-3 as Whiteside's record falls to 0-6. Alan |
