Subject: Reds @ Marlins

The Marlins may not be flying as high as they were earlier this season, but they still gave the Reds a peck of trouble this week....

Game 1: Tim Pugh and Charlie Hough hooked up in a pitchers duel of sorts, with neither hurler being particularly sharp but escaping damage since both offenses were having a LOB contest (throw in a couple of timely Cincy GIDPs too).  Scoreless into the 5th, the Reds broke on top via Reggie Sanders' 2-run homer which represented our entire scoring for the day, but that was quickly followed by a Mark Lewis error which gave back an "earned" but undeserved run.

Cincy LOBbed the bases loaded without scoring half an inning later, and Pugh immediately blew the rest of the lead without assistance when he turned a routine x-play into a 3-base howler, another run laughably scored as "earned".  Some teams get away with errors, but *most* of the few errors the Reds have committed in 1994 are super-costly ones that HAL tacks onto hits or otherwise result in multiple bases for our fortunate opponents, putting us at risk of setting an all-time record for most unearned runs allowed per error (not to mention these "earned" ones).

The final nail in today's coffin was the only run Florida got without considerable help from the Cincy sabotage defense, that coming in the bottom of the 7th and proving decisive in today's 3-2 loss, our 9th defeat by a single run so far against 6 wins.  FLN reliever Robb Nen was just wild enough to keep the Cincy batters ducking (5 batters faced, none reached base, 3 K's but also 2 wild pitches).

========================================================================

Game 2: The Reds outhit the home squad by a mere 11-5, so naturally we came a whisker away from losing another close one thanks to having an even higher number in the LOB column (12) than the hit column.

Again, two less than stellar pitchers -- John Cummings and Paul Gibson, who was making his CIN debut -- got better results than they should have, with Gibson permitting just one run in 5 innings before the bullpen choked the lead away.  The pen vultured a win when the Cincy offense eked out a run in the 9th, and we wound up on the right end of a close one for a change.  Final score: 3-2.

Todd Jones forfeited the lead when he gave up a solo gopher to Kurt Abbott, but Reggie Sanders tripled leading off the 9th and we got him home before LOBbing a couple more RISP.  Jeff Brantley provided 2.2 hitless (and more importantly, scoreless) relief innings to close it out and earn his 5th win of the season.

========================================================================

Game 3: Kevin Gross was cruising along with leads of 5-2 and 7-4, but was yanked after suffering back-to-back gopher bites in the FLN 7th.  Chuck McElroy and some more sabotage defense completed the choke when he allowed a Si 1, lo 2-20 that of course was a hit, and it combined with a throwing error to donate the tying run the bottom of the 8th.

The Reds did our best to avoid another massive LOB day, but that effort failed (10 LOB) and the method by which we tried to avoid it wasn't very well thought out either (FOUR timely rally-killing DPs).  Three of those came in the 8th, 9th and 10th innings so they could be as costly as possible, but we sneaked in a run in the 10th just like we had the day before -- a leadoff triple, this one by catcher Eddie Taubensee, was followed by a pinch-single from John Kruk moments before DP #4 terminated that rally.

McElroy got the win after blowing the save with Sanders' help, and Brantley again finished up with a successful outing and registered his 4th save.

Alan
