Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
The Reds got outstanding starting pitching from not-exactly staff aces Roper, Browning & Hanson, who combined for 21.1 IP, 10 hits, 3 runs -- and just one win. Because we also got our typical atrocious bullpen work and our typical zero clutch hitting and zero breaks on split cards. Cincy should have swept the series thanks to all that great starting pitching, but could also easily have been swept thanks to all those other factors.... Game 1: John Roper hasn't been a stellar pitcher overall in 1994, but he's had numerous good starts -- like today for example (6 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs) -- where he's gotten exactly squat to show for it. And here we go again. Roper was staked to a 2-0 lead and then was removed before he could get into trouble. So that somebody else could get into trouble, which took about 2 seconds. Todd Jones threw 9 pitches to the first 2 batters he faced in the LAN 7th and 8 of them were balls. Two batters later a double erased the hard-earned Cincy lead and removed Roper from any chance at the win he deserved. Jeff Brantley waited an inning in order to increase the suspense, then choked up the game-losing gopher on a 2-out surgical split card to the Pi(a)zza man. Reds choke, 3-2. Cincy had 2 on with 1 out in the 9th then sent up a pinch hitter to hit into the game-ending DP. ================================================================ Game 2: The Reds scored early but (almost) not often enough against Ricky Bones, who permitted 3 first-inning runs and not a thing more. Fortunately, Tom Browning permitted nothing at all to the Dodgers as he took a 3-hit shutout into the bottom of the 9th. After an insurance run in the top of the frame made the score 4-0, Browning was nicked for a pair of singles sandwiched around an out. Enter Todd Jones again, who naturally donated a free pass to immediately load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. A force play broke the shutout, then Jones helpfully wild pitched another run across the plate. With the inevitable game-tying gopher just waiting to break out of his cage, Thomas Howard hauled in Eric Karros' long fly ball at the warning track. Final score: 4-2. The Reds registered a miniscule 16-5 advantage in total bases today, so of course the contest became a real nailbiter. ================================================================ Game 3: Erik Hanson took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th, when -- you guessed it! -- he and (mostly) the bullpen choked it all away yet again. Cincy's Eddie Taubensee had missed a home run by the width of one thin split card earlier in the game, and the choke was completed in the 8th when Piazza gophered one right at the split card limit. L.A. had it all but won in the bottom of the 9th when they loaded the bases with 1 out, but Hector Carrasco got a DP to temporarily avert disaster. Seconds later, as only the Reds could possibly do, one of our batters found the '1' in the split card deck -- a rare enough event in and of itself -- and made an out (no it wasn't an x-play, it was a regular hit chance). Finally in the 11th, Barry Larkin picked a good time to get our first clutch hit of the series and starter Kevin Gross held the fort in the bottom of the inning to save the win for Carrasco after McElroy & Brantley had choked. Final score: 4-3. The Dodgers mustered only 6 hits in 11 innings (and only had 16 hits in 29 innings in 3 games) but, just as they had all series long, made the absolute most of them today while the Reds LOBbed 12.
