Subject: Reds @ Padres

In what would be a first-round playoff matchup if the season ended today, these two apparently evenly-matched teams played a series consisting entirely of 1-run decisions.  If the Reds had lost all 3 we'd have the major league lead in 1-run losses, but somehow we managed not to do that.  We'll get there yet....

Game 1: Underachieving Jose Rijo had a pretty much identical start to San Diego's Andy Benes, and although they combined to work nearly 16 innings neither one was around for the final verdict.  The teams took turns scoring individual runs until the Reds cut ahead in line and tallied in the top of the 10th for a 3-2 win.

Baserunning had an enormous impact on all games; Cincy would have won this one in regulation but Mark Lewis (95% success chance) was picked off in the 5th just before Lenny Webster's home run became a solo shot instead of a 2-run blast.  That exact scenario would happen again (only with different names) later in the series, and would prove extremely costly to the Reds.

The Padres were CS a couple of times today too, and in the 10th Pedro 'The Other One' Martinez gave the Reds the winning run which scored in large part thanks to his own error and a wild pitch.  He also donated a couple of walks but we politely decided to leave the bases loaded.  With 2 outs and no one on in the bottom of the 10th, Todd Jones permitted a pair of runners on very low-probability rolls & splits, but fanned Ken Caminiti to preserve his 4th win of the season.

=========================================================================

Game 2: Joey Hamilton, whose first major league win came at Cincinnati's expense earlier this year, was less fortunate today as he was victimized by some poor defense in the Reds' 4-run 3rd but was otherwise unscathed.  With a runner on 1st and 1 out, Chad Curtis couldn't get to Felix Jose's x-double and runners went to 2nd & 3rd.  The next batter tapped weakly to Caminiti, who tried to nail the runner at home -- and missed.

With 2 outs, Kevin Mitchell got a typically bad split card in his loaded 2-column and had to settle for a double.  But he didn't stop lumbering, Curtis gave him 2 more bases via a throwing error and Mitchell followed Bret Boone & Hal Morris across the plate.

Superunderachiever John Smiley wasn't about to hold any lead as narrow as a mere 4-0, and so he dutifully reported for surgery in the SDN 6th.  Four hits rapidly reduced the score to 4-3 but Eddie Williams was gunned at the plate to end the inning otherwise the Padres would probably still be batting.

Tony Fernandez delivered a 3-run BPHR half a frame later to presumably put the contest out of reach.  Ha.

Barry Larkin started the SDN 8th with the gift of an error.  The runner eventually scored.  It was scored as *earned*.  You tell me how that works.

Earned or not, the Cincy pen choked up 3 runs in the inning but in the middle of it Williams was nailed AGAIN at home plate.  The Reds had a chance to gain some breathing room in the 9th but LOBbed 'em loaded again, and Jeff Brantley -- after allowing 3 runs to score in the 8th -- delivered an uneventful 9th.  Final score: 7-6.

=========================================================================

Game 3: John Roper did it again, what he pretty much does every week: 7 IP, 2 runs, doesn't win.

The Reds had taken a 1-0 lead in the 4th that should have been 2-0 but Thomas Howard was unwilling to accept the charity of having reached on an error and was erased on a CS just before Hal Morris homered.  Had Thomas scored, it would have been interesting to see if the official scorer counted it as a "earned" run.  Why not?

In the bottom of that same inning the score became tied on 2 hits and a successful RBI sac bunt.  San Diego threatened again in the 5th, having another runner nailed at the plate (on a mundane gb(B) rather than an OF assist) then taking a page from the Cincy playbook and leaving the bases loaded.

The losing run scored in the 7th when Curtis raced home from second on Bip Roberts' single and the Reds never put up any fight against relievers Storm Davis & Trevor Hoffman.  Final score: 2-1.
