Subject: Reds @ Mets
The Reds conclude another underachieving week, one miracle comeback away from a 1-5 record as these two teams took turns making their opponent's scrubby pitchers look highly competent.... Game 1: NYN scrub starter Phil Leftwich and his real-life 5.68 ERA has had quite a fortunate season for New York, in large part due to his phenomenal success against the Cincinnati Reds -- 2 starts, 2 complete games, 2-0 record, 0.50 ERA; his ERA is 8 times higher than that against all other teams. And on it went today as the talented Cincy offense could muster only 1 run (not even earned) while forfeiting what few chances we got by hitting into a pair of timely DPs. Final score: 3-1. CIN starter Erik Hanson had a solid outing, scattering 6 hits and 1 walk in 7 IP, but 2 of those 6 hits were gopher balls. ======================================================= Game 2: CIN scrub starter Paul Gibson hasn't had much opportunity to show what little stuff he possesses, but today he let it all hang out for 5 innings. Gibson allowed just 2 hits, walked nobody, and fanned 7 Mets in his brief but generally effective stint on the mound. As in game 1, Cincy pitchers had a propensity for suffering gopher bites -- among the 2 hits Gibson allowed were 0 singles, 0 doubles and 0 triples. Also as in game 1, both New York gophers came with nobody on base but they were sufficient by themselves to knock Gibby from the game with a 2-2 tie instead of a lead. Fortunately for the seldom-used hurler, the Reds scored 3 times in the inning in which he was lifted for a pinch-hitter, we went on to amass a mere 15-5 advantage in hits (10 LOB, 2 more GIDP) and eventually wound up on the happy end of a 6-2 final score with Gibson registering his first win. Every Cincy starter had at least 1 hit, not excluding Gibson who went 1 for 2 with an RBI. In fact, every batter who came to the plate had at least 1 hit: pinch-hitter John Kruk singled during our 6th inning rally and pinch-hitter Kevin Mitchell supplied his 23rd home run to close out the scoring in the 8th. ======================================================= Game 3: NYN scrub starter Kevin Ritz was made to look as good as possible by the Cincy offense, working a season-high 8 innings and striking out a season-high 7 batters. We did score 4 times in the first 4 innings off of Ritz, but John Smiley's season of remarkable underachievement continued unabated as he blew a pair of 2-run leads, albeit once with the help of some sabotage defense. Those 2 unearned runs we donated looked to be mighty costly as the Reds trailed 5-4 after 8 innings. Unlike pretty much any other pitcher in the league, NYN's John Franco seems to save his *worst* outings for his ex-team. In his second appearance of 1994 against the Reds, Franco's record fell to 0-2 when he permitted 3 runs via 5 consecutive 1-out singles in the top of the 9th. Jeff Branson, whose error generously gave New York 2 undeserved runs, negated that gift with a 2-run single during our unlikely comeback. Up 7-5, Cincy closer Todd Jones got into immediate trouble in the bottom of the 9th (walk, RBI double) but he somehow retired the heart of the New York order to save the day for Danny Cox, who debuted during this series with 3 perfect relief innings featuring 5 strikeouts, and he got win #1 today. Final score: 7-6. Felix Jose and Kevin Mitchell launched 2-run homers off of Ritz to give us that pair of early leads which were wasted. Alan |
