Sox take 3 out of 5 (see game 3) after dropping the opener as Jose Canseco threw a nice welcoming party for his new teammates. game1: Clemens was not sharp but the Boston offense battled back in this one. Toronto got a run in the first thanks to an x play single to 2nd. Normally Lind would be out there but Naehring got the start for usage reasons. Olerud followed with an rbi double. Carter's 2 out 2 run homer capped a 3 run fourth and it was 4-0. Greenwell homered to get Boston on the board in the 4th but the Sox had a runner caught stealing and another picked off in the inning. Canseco walked, stole second and scored on Valentin's double to cut the lead to 2 in the 7th. Cooper had a 2 run double in the 8th to tie the game but White had an rbi double in the bottom of the inning with 2 outs to produce the 5-4 win. In you were keeping track that was 8 of 9 runs in the game that scored via a double or home run. Canseco finished 2-4 with a double in his Boston debut game 2: Canseco got started right away with a bomb to open the 2nd to give Boston the early lead. Canseco, Valentin and Brunansky all doubled 2 bring in 2 in the 4th. Naehring had a sac fly and Canseco added his 2nd homer in the 5th to make it 5-0. In the 8th Canseco settled for a double when he got a 19 on a 1-16 hr chance. Carter homered in the 8th to break up the shutout as Boston won 5-1. Saberhagen walked 2 (and hit a batter)in addition to the homer and had another homer end up a single with the W hitter. His walk to hr ration is now 14-12 and 30-29 over the last 2 seasons. game 3 (and 4). In honor of Ernie Banks they decided to play 2 today, although it only counted as 1. Thats right, the game went 18 innings, just what a usage strapped team needs still early in the year. Canseco again got things started with a solo homer to start the 2nd. Toronto got a 2 out single from Borders to tie the game. In the 5th Cooper walked, move to second on a bunt and moved up to third on a flyout. That proved big as he then scored on a wild pitch. Canseco homered again in the 6th to make it 3-1 but Olerud responded in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead back to 1. White's sac fly in the 7th tied the game and would be the last run for awhile. Eusebio's lead off double in the 11th was the only serious scoring threat until the 18th. Cooper had a 1 out single and Nieves had a 2 out double. Both runners scored as White threw the ball out of play. That proved big as Delgado led off the bottom of the inning with a homer of Henke to make the final 5-4. Boston drew 8 walks but not allow a single one in the 18 innings. Must have been something about a last name that started with M. Mouton was 0-9 and Moliter was 0-8. game 4: This one was ugly early. For the 3rd straight game Canseco homered in his first at bat. This time it was a 2 run shot in the first inning. Joe Orsulak countered with a 3 run shot that just cleared the fence (8 on a 1-8 chance) to put the Jays up 3-2 after 1. Proving the 18th inning wasn't a fluke, White again threw away a ball on a double to permit 2 runs to score in the 2nd to put Boston on top for good. 3rd inning was a replay of the first two as Boston scored 2 runs again, this time on back to back homers by Cooper and Canseco. After not scoring in the 4th, Boston was back at it in the 5th, scoring 3 times. Vaughn's 2 run homer capped the inning. Moliter had an rbi double in the bottom of the 5th to put a halt to 7 straight Sox runs. Naehring homered in the 7th and Olerud in the 8th to complete the scoring as Boston won 10-5. Canseco ended up 11-16 with 3 2b's and 6 hr's including 3 straight 2 homer games. He added 6 walks and a stolen base. |
