Subject: Reds @ Expos
The luckiest, most overachieving (and most talented) team in the league hosts the unluckiest, most underachieving (and second-most talented) team in the league. Would the Olympic Mausoleum continue to be a house of horrors for the luckless Reds? I guess so, unless you consider scoring a grand total of 0 runs in 27 innings as something other than "horrific". The Expos are playing .819 ball against the rest of the N.L.; against the Reds it's 1.000 (9-0 now) and shows no signs of decreasing.... Game 1: Luckless John Roper balked home a gift run in the first inning; the Reds got a hit in the first inning. Nothing had changed at all as we went into the 7th -- the Expos still had just 1 run, the Reds still had just 1 hit. Frustrated by the ineptitude of his teammates, Roper decided to sink to their level and put the contest out of reach. Roper's own error, a 4-pitch free pass and a timely gopher made the score 4-0 three batters into the bottom of the 7th, and that's how it (and Roper's day) ended. Final score: 4-0. The Cincy offense ended its day on a high note however, actually getting a hit in the 9th inning to complete our 2 for 30 day at the plate. ================================================================ Game 2: That high note faded away quickly, although we did get another hit in the top of the first (and 8 more over the next 8 innings) while the powerful MON offense managed just 5 hits all day. But three of those 5 were nicely clustered into the bottom of the first against Kevin Gross, the third of them being a timely 2-out gopher which gave the home team a quick 3-0 advantage. The teams played 8 more innings for no apparent reason. Final score: 3-0. Say, here's a fun little stat from today's boxscore: LOB: CIN - 11, MON - 1. Get no baserunners and lose (game 1); get a lot of baserunners and lose (game 2) while getting pretty good mound work -- aside from 2 bad pitches in 2 games -- both times. It's good to have that kind of versatility. ================================================================ Game 3: When this one started off just like the last one-- a quick 3-0 deficit after 1 inning -- the Reds finally accepted their fate and gave up entirely. Final score: 6-0. Jose Rijo took one for the team, throwing 150 pitches in this most luckless of outings while the second most talented offense in the league racked up 6 hits, all singles, and erased half of those with critical rally-killing GIDPs (as if 1 hit constitutes a "rally"). Hittable Dennis Martinez took a 4-hitter into the 9th, when the CIN offense suddenly exploded for 2 singles and a walk, opting this time to LOB the bases loaded rather than hit into a 4th DP. It's good to have that kind of versatility. Alan |
