Boston goes into the Twin Cities and comes out with twin losses. game 1: Hesketh and Tapani locked up in a pitcher's duel in this one. Hesketh allowed 6 base runners in 7 innings (2 hits, 2 walks and 2hbp). Unfortunately 4 of the 6 were consecutive in the 2nd inning. HBP, 2b, HBP loaded the bases and the single brought in the games only run. The 2 walks Hesketh allowed were erased by double plays. Boston had their chances against Tapani as they left the bases loaded in both the first and 6th inning and runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 7th. Minnesota held on for the 1-0 win. game 2: Canseco's 2 run homer in the first capped a 3 run inning. In the 3rd Boston scored 3 times with just 1 hit. A hbp and double were followed by 3 straight walks and a sac fly. Boston managed just 1 run in the 4th even though they had bases loaded and no outs. Saberhagen allowed 9 hits in 7 innings and had 10 strikeouts. Belinda pitched the last 2 innings and allowed 2 9th inning runs to make the final 7-3. The Twins out hit the Sox 13-7 but Boston drew 9 walks and out LOB'd the Twins 10-9. game 3: Not much pitching in this one as at least 1 team scored in all 9 innings. Boston scored in 6 of 9 and Minnesota 5 of 8 innings. The difference was a 7 run 3rd inning. Kirby led off the game with a home run but the Twins tied it in the 2nd. The 3rd saw the Sid Fernandez that everyone was expecting when he didn't get drafted until the 4th round. 4-8 walk, hbp then back to back 6-5 homers and the Twins were just warming up. A 6-6 double and another 4-8 walk were followed by a double and throwing error that cleared the bases. 7 men up and seven men scored. Fernandez worked one more 4-8 walk into the inning but escaped further damage. Twins got a run on a sac fly in the 4th and Canseco had an rbi single in the 5th. Knoublach hit a 2 run bp homer in the 5th to end Fernandez's suffering. Boston got an unearned run in the 6th to make it 11-3 and then HAL tried to run things up. Mack singled and stole 2nd and scored on McCarthy's double. HAL also sent a 1-9 runner to score who was thrown out at the plate. After Canseco homered in the top of the 7th, Walback walked and stole 2nd in the bottom of the inning but did not score. Kirby hit his 2nd homer of the day in the 8th, a 2 run shot and Canseco added another in the 9th to make the final 12-7. Canseco's 4th 2 run homer game as a Sox player put him in a tie for the 3rd place (with Brunansky) on the team hr list with 10. |
