Sox take 3 of 4 in an ugly series

game 1: Sox rode a strong finish to a big win in this one. Every player had a hit and 8 of the 9 scored a run. The big finish helped Aaron Sele stay in until the 9th despite giving up runs in each of the first 4 innings of the game. Mouton doubled to lead off the game, went to 3rd on a Lind bunt and scored on a Naehring grounder to give Boston a quick lead. Baltimore duplicated that when Anderson led off with a double and came around on 2 ground outs. Speiers was credited with a sac fly in the 2nd when Mouton dropped his bases loaded fly ball to give Baltimore a 2-1 lead. Hammonds singled in a run in the 3rd before Valentin walked with the bases loaded and Greenwell had an rbi ground out to tie the game in the 4th. Sox had loaded the bases with no outs and Canseco rolled a 2-7. 2-8 was an automatic grand slam and 2-6 was a 1-14 bp homer chance. Brunansky ended the inning with a 6-4 which was between a bp homer and a 1-16 hr chance.  Hoiles led off the bottom of the 4th with a successful bp homer and Ripken added an rbi single to get the 2 run lead back. In the 7th Boston got 2b,2b 1b to start the inning. Meacham came on and uncorked a wild one before serving up a fat one to Tony Eusebio and the Sox were up 2. Boston put it away in the 8th on a single, wp,wp, single and a 2 run Brunansky homer to make the final 10-5.

game 2: Brunansky had an rbi double in the 4th to give Boston the lead but Clemens couldn't hold it today. With 2 outs in the fifth, Baltimore got a hbp, x play single and 2 run double to take the lead. They added a run in the 6th on a wild pitch and capped the 4-1 win with a Palmeiro homer in the 8th. Boston rolled 14 times in Nagy's empty 4 column in the first 6 innings.

game 3: Biggio homered in the first off of Saberhagen to give Baltimore the early lead. Oquendo tripled to open the 3rd and Cooper followed with a double (just missing back to back triples by getting a 12 on a 1-11 chance). Valentin doubled him in and Boston had a 2-1 lead. Baines had an rbi single in the bottom of the 3rd to tie it right up. In the 8th, Valentin came through with another 2 out rbi double to give Boston the 3-2 win. Lilliquist struck out both batters he faced for his first save of the season.

game 4: Here is UGLY with a capital U. The teams combined to score in 7 of the first 8 half innings (the only 0 was Boston in the top of the 2nd). The score was 8-6 with 7 homers by that time. Eusebio had a 2 run homer for Boston in the first and Baltimore got them right back on a sac fly and Hammonds single. After the rare goose egg on the scoreboard, Hoiles led off the bottom of the 2nd with a homer. Vaughn had a 2 run homer in the top of the third but Baltimore came back with 2 runs on a 2 out bases loaded x-play single.  Greenwell homered leading off the 4th and Lind had an rbi single to give Boston the lead again. After 2 quick outs in the bottom of the 4th, the O's got back-to-back-to-back homers to take the 8-6 lead. The 5th,6th and top of 7th saw just 2 base runners (both for boston) before the O's loaded the bases with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th but Belinda got Anderson to hit into a force out to end the inning. A walk, single and wild pitch in the 8th brought the Sox within one. Cooper got a game tying single (both boston hits were on the same roll and both missed the 1-13 double chance, getting splits of 17 and 20). The O's got a couple of 2 out walks but couldn't score. In the 9th, the O's pinch hit for gomez and were forced to put Benzinger in at 3b. With 2 outs in the 10th, Brunansky hit a shot down the line that Benzinger got to but threw wild to allow Bruno to get to third base. The O's tried to pitch around Cooper but he slapped the ball through the hole for the go ahead rbi single. Mouton followed with a double but Cooper didn't try to score and Lind flew out to end the inning. Henke came on and gave up a lead off double. A ground out and sac fly tied the game up. Eusebio led off the 11th with another shot to Benzinger and ended up on third base with the single+error. After Vaughn struck out, Canseco singled and stole second. Valentin was walked intentionally and Kirby bunted the runners up before Bruno came through with a 2 run single. The bottom of the 11th started with Valentin booting the first 2 balls hit to hit before turning a big double play. Benzinger then completed his goat role by striking out to end the game. Boston "won" 12-9.  10 batters ended up with 2 hits (6 for Baltimore) and 3 more Boston players had 3 hits in the game. 6 guys had 2 rbi and Hoiles had 3 as arena ball was previewed in this one.
