Subject: BAA @ MLA Week 16 (plus Week 17 CM)

The Orioles went back over .500 (barely) by taking two of three in Milwaukee.

Game 1: BAA 3, MLA 1

The first inning was noisy but scoreless; Baltimore failed to capitalize on an error and a Brady Anderson steal, while the Brewers’ first three batters singled but two were thrown out by Tony Pena on steal attempts.  Another Brewers error in the second set up a sac fly by Howard Johnson that gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead.  After that, things were quiet for a while.  Baserunning miscues cost the Orioles multiple scoring opportunities against Milwaukee starter Dave Stewart, and Baltimore’s   Ben McDonald didn’t give up a run until the Brewers tied in on a passed ball by Pena in the 7th.  Baltimore finally got something right on the basepaths to retake the lead in the 8th: Mike Devereaux pinch-ran for leadfooted Harold Baines and scored on a two-out double by Craig Grebeck, who came home on a Pena double to make it 3-1.  McDonald went the distance for his third complete game of the season, allowing six hits and zero walks.

Game 2: BAA 16, MLA 9

Orioles starter Greg Swindell was awful in the first, giving up three hits, two walks, and a two-run single to BJ Surhoff before he was bailed out by a double play.  In the top of the 2nd, Mike Aldrete doubled in a run and beat out a throw to score on a Bill Spiers single for a 2-2 tie.  Baltimore chased Brewers starter Bill Wegman with a two-run rally in the 3rd, thanks to RBI singles by Jeffrey Hammonds and Aldrete.  In the 4th, an RBI double by Craig Biggio made it 5-2., but Jeff Cirillo answered with a two-run double to get the Brewers within a run before Swindell was again bailed out by a double play.  Chris Hoiles hit a three-run homer in the 5th to give the O’s an 8-4 lead, which the Brewers promptly cut to 8-6 on a Surhoff double, which would have done more damage if it hadn’t been preceded by yet another Orioles double play.   In the 6th, Baltimore blew the game open with a six-run rally capped by a two-run Anderson homer.  Mickey Morandini doubled in a run in the bottom of the 6th, but Harold Baines hit a two-run blast in the 7th to make it 16-7.  Milwaukee got their last two runs in the ninth on a Surhoff single and a sac fly.  Swindell got a richly undeserved win despite allowing seven hits and four walks in five innings.  Too bad the official scorer couldn’t have given the decision to the Orioles infield.

Game 3: MLA 4, BAA 2

Any game where Greg Vaughn steals third – twice—is likely to go well for the Brewers.  Milwaukee starter Steve Ontiveros didn’t allow a hit until the fifth, but it was a double by Rafael Palmeiro, who eventually scored on a sac fly for a 1-0 Baltimore lead… that lasted exactly one batter, as Surhoff took Mike Remlinger deep to tie the game.  In the 6th, the O’s briefly retook the lead on a single by Craig Grebeck, but two doubles and a Surhoff homer put the Brewers on top 4-2, and Ontiveros and Mike Fetters shut the Orioles down for the win.
