The battle of the Sox was decidely one color, although all games ended up close. The series didn't get off to a good start as the first batter got a split of 20. game 1: Darwin made just his 2nd start of the year and looked like his old self. He was perfect through 3. A lead off single in the 4th was caught stealing. He ended up going 6 innings and allowing just 3 hits and 0 walks while striking out 3 and facing just 1 over the minimum. Vaughn doubled and scored in the 2nd to give Boston an early lead. In the 6th, Kirby walked, stole second and scored on a Cooper single before the inning ended on the 3rd Boston double play of the game. Mike Maddux came on and threw 2 nearly identical innings. The first batter in both inning rolled 6-9, which happened to be a home run. He did allow a walk in the 7th but then picked Ventura off. Ventura further played the goat in this one when he made a 2 out error in the 8th. Cooper followed with a 2 run homer that proved to be the winning runs. Lilliquist came on in the 9th and gave up singles to 3 of the 4 batters he faced before Henke got the last 2 outs for his 26th save. game 2: Clemens and Bere locked up in a pitchers duel in this one. Of the 5 baserunners in the first 4 innings, one was caught stealing and one was erased on a double play. Both teams threatened in the 5th. Boston got a double and walk before a double play and strike out ended the threat. Eisenrich led off the Chicago half with a triple was erased one batter later on a failed squeeze play. Berryhill led off the 6th with a double was gunned at the plate to end the inning. Boston finally broke through in the 7th. Cooper led off with a walk and Canseco followed with a 2 run homer. Finally led off the White Sox 9th with a double and Clemens got the next batter before departing. Ryan gave up an rbi single before getting a dp grounder to end the 2-1 win. game 3: For as well pitches as the first 2 games (well 2 1/2) this one went downhill quickly. Hard to believe this one was scoreless for 4 innings. By the 5th it was 8-5 and the final score was 14-10. Boston batted around in the 5th WITHOUT MAKING AN OUT. 4 singles and 4 walks produced 5 runs before Vaughn cleared them with a double to make it 8-0. The White Sox also batted around, getting 4 walks (2 back to back with the bases loaded) and 2 hits to score their 5 runs. 3 straight one out singles in the 6th made it and 8-6 game and Shipley's rbi double in the 7th made it a one run game. After 2 outs to open the 8th inning, Tabaka ran out of steam and walked the bases loaded. Jones came in and uncorked a wild one before intentionally walking Vaughn to reload the bases. Valentin cleared them with a grand slam and Brunansky followed with another homer. Shipley hit a 3 run homer in the 9th to make the final 14-10. If you weren't keeping track, both teams walked 9 batters ( and there was 1 hbp). Luckily there were 4 dp's (2 apiece) to keep those early innings scoreless. Boston scored in just 2 innings in the game. Shipley went 4-5 with 6 rbi for Chicago and Belinda got a save despite giving up 4 runs in his 3 innings of work. 4 of Chicago's first 9 hits were x play singles to 3b where Naehring couldn't stop anything. Lavalliere was the only 1 of the 18 starters not to score a run. (cooper got 1 ab and didnt' score for boston). game 1 had 3 walks total, game 2 saw 10 walks and game 3 had 18 walks. There were 4 double plays in each game of the series (7-5 overall with Boston hitting into the 7). |
