Subject: Reds @ Rockies

The Reds were cruising to a sweep when they were suddenly derailed by a bunch of unlikely events -- and some not so unlikely ones (like a mere five 2-out RBIs for our opponent) and settled for taking 2 of 3....

Game 1: All series long the Reds put quick runs on the board in the 1st inning and then, with minor exceptions, went back into hibernation for the remainder of the contest.  Series hitting star Bret Boone (9 for 14) opened this day with a single, scored on a sac fly and Tony Fernandez followed with an RBI double before we LOBbed 2 RISP.

CIN starter Erik Hanson was doing well until he was nicked for a pair of RBI singles in the middle innings, and the contest was tied.  Meanwhile, Armando Reynoso was barely giving the powerful but underachieving Cincy offense anything at all.

But that came to an end when Reynoso walked Kevin Mitchell (who still can't find his ultra-loaded 2 column anywhere) and Felix Jose followed with the game's only home run.  Even with the lack of gophers there was still quite a bit of power evident today, in the form of 5 triples between the two teams, three of them coming via batters who had only 1 apiece entering the week, and 2 others by Reggie Sanders who now has 11.

Two late rallies, both of which we politely gave parts of right back, led to a 9-4 final.  Hanson and reliever Jeff Brantley combined to walk no one and struck out 14 Colorado batters.

===================================================================================

Game 2: Six baserunners in the top of the first inning became 4 runs with Sanders' 3-run blast being the key blow.  That was more than enough support for Kevin Gross, who appeared intent on throwing a shutout in the majors' hittingest ballpark, but that was spoiled in the 8th.  Final score: 7-1.

The Reds tallied 24 total bases, led by Boone's 5 3 4 2 day which included a pair of home runs.  Benito Santiago made his first start for his new club and went 0 for 3 at the plate and 1 for 2 on opponent SB attempts.

Ex-CIN starter Tim Belcher, who is now the Rockies staff ace with 8 wins in 1994, was very effective after the first inning finally came to an end (4 IP, 3 hits, 1 run).

===================================================================================

Game 3: Bret Boone opened the game with a double and Hal Morris supplied a 2-run homer and the Reds were off and hitting again.  But the 2-0 lead was not enough for Tim Pugh, even though he would have pitched a shutout today if only 2 outs per inning were required instead of 3.

Pugh was victimized with 2 outs and the bases empty in the CON 2nd when Joe Girardi found a needle-in-a-haystack HBP on a dice roll of 2 in an otherwise totally barren column.  Two batters later a non-hitting pitcher delivered the RBI.  Two innings later a 2-out gopher put the home team in front for the first time in the series and another 2-out hit in the 5th made the score 4-2.

Yet *another* timely 2-out hit plated Colorado's final run in the 7th, but the Reds didn't give up entirely on a comeback.  In the 9th inning we loaded the bases with 2 outs against closer Bruce Ruffin, and although we did get an RBI walk from Mitchell, there were zero clutch hits to be found in the Cincinnati column on this day.  Final score: 5-3.
