Previous message                 Next message Message #: 30788 Message from: Charlie Steinhice Sent: Jul 12, 2014 Subject: BAA @ SEA Week 18 (plus Week 19 CM) Seattle took advantage of Baltimore’s lackluster bullpen to take two of three.   Game 1: SEA 6, BAA 5 (12)   The teams traded speed-aided runs in the first.  Baltimore’s Craig Biggio doubled and beat a throw to the plate to score on a single by Harold Baines; Seattle’s Kenny Lofton singled, stole second, advanced to third on a bad throw, and scored on a groundout.  Despite multiple scoring opportunities for both teams, the score remained 1-1 until the 6th, when Ken Griffey Jr. hit an RBI double to put the Mariners ahead.  Alex Rodriguez singled in an insurance run in the 7th, and Jay Buhner added a two-run homer in the 8th that appeared to put the game out of reach.  But in the top of the 9th, Mariners starter Jack McDowell ran out of gas, and Craig Biggio chased him with a two-run triple that made it 5-3.  Seattle brought in Dennis Eckersley to close it out, but Cal Ripken took him deep to tie the game and send it into extra innings.  In the bottom of the 12th, the Mariners loaded the bases with no one out.  After Buhner hit into a 5-2-3 double play, it looked like the O’s might escape, but Sandy Alomar Jr. came through with a walkoff single.   Game 2: SEA 4, BAA 3   A third inning sac fly by Griffey gave Seattle a 1-0 lead, and for a while it looked like that would be all the support John Burkett would need.  Burkett left in the seventh with two on, and after reliever Bill Risley walked in the tying run, Mike Aldrete hit a two-run double to put the O’s on top 3-1.  But in the 8th, Baltimore’s decision to let lefty reliever Steve Frey pitch to Buhner backfired badly, as Buhner tripled in two runs for the tie and ultimately scored on a bases-loaded walk to put Seattle back on top.    Game 3: BAA 8, SEA 3   Baltimore took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd on singles by Biggio and Ripken.  In the 6th, Brady Anderson doubled in two runs and scored on a rare throwing error by Griffey to make it 5-0.  Greg Swindell pitched unexpectedly well, throwing 6 2/3 shutout innings.  The Mariners got on the board in the 8th on a Joey Cora homer and a Lofton single, and they got the tying run to the plate before Buhner grounded out.   In the 9th, the Orioles’ illogical decision to have Baines pinch-hit against a lefty paid off with a three-run homer that finally chased Seattle starter Jamie Moyer after 162 pitches.  Griffey closed out the scoring with an anticlimactic solo homer in the bottom of the 9th.
