Any chances Baltimore had of a late season pennant run were snuffed out in a four-game sweep by the first place Yankees.  But then, what do you expect when you have a lead at the end of only three out of 36 innings?

Game 1: NYA 10, BAA 5

Yankees 1B Jim Leyritz started the scoring in the first with a two-run blast off Charles Nagy.  In the second, after getting two quick outs, Nagy gave up a walk and five singles for a 5-0 Yankees lead, and the bleeding only stopped when Orioles CF Brady Anderson threw Jody Reed out at home.  New York starter Scott Kameniecki took a no-hitter into the sixth, but then gave up a walk, a single, and a three-run shot by Anderson that ended Kameniecki’s night.  However, thanks to the Orioles bullpen, that was as close as the game would get.  Wade Boggs went deep in the bottom of the sixth to get two of those runs back, and a prolonged New York rally in the 7th made it 10-3.  Baltimore got a meaningless run in the 8th on a Craig Grebeck single and another in the 9th when Rafael Palmeiro hit one out.  Leyritz finished the game a triple short of hitting the cycle.

Game 2: NYA 7, BAA 1

The Orioles took a brief lead in the top of the first on a Palmeiro single, but in the bottom of the inning, the Yankees tied it on an errant throw by O’s backup catcher Jeff Tackett and took a 3-1 lead on another two-run homer by Leyritz.  Doubles by Bernie Williams and Boggs in the second made it 5-1, and in the 4th Mike Gallego homered for two more runs, chasing Baltimore started Ben McDonald.  The Orioles bullpen was unusually effective, holding the Yankees scoreless for the rest of the game, but Yankees starter Danny Jackson did the same to Baltimore and went the distance for his 15th win.

Game 3:  NYA 3, BAA 2

Leyritz wasn’t in the Yankees lineup, so instead Danny Tartabull took Greg Swindell deep in the first for a 1-0 New York lead.  In the 4th, Yankees starter Jimmy Key served up a rare gopher ball to Leo Gomez that put Baltimore up 2-1.  This time the lead lasted a whole inning; in the 5th, Gallego hit another homer to tie it up and Paul O’Neill added a go-ahead single.  The Orioles failed to score in the 8th after loading the bases with one out, accounting for three of their 11 runners LOB.

Game 4: NYA 4, BAA 3

This time the Yankees unaccountably failed to homer, or even score, in the first.  The game was scoreless until Baltimore’s Chris Hoiles hit a three-run homer in the 4th off Kent Mercker.  This time the lead lasted TWO whole innings.  In the sixth, Leyritz singled in a run and scored on a double by Paul O’Neill, who came home on a sac fly by Randy Velarde for a 3-3 tie.  Still in the 6th, Tartabull singled home the go-ahead run and chased Orioles starter Curt Schilling.  An ill-advised suicide squeeze attempt in the 7th ended Baltimore’s only real threat after that.  Mercker held on for a complete game win.

Boggs, who went 7-for-7 in the first two games, ended the series 9 for 15 with six runs, 5 RBI, 3 doubles, and a homer, plus two walks and an HBP for an estimated OPS of 1.556.  But at least we caught him stealing once.
