Padres inch closer to the title with a split in LA even though the splits were atrocious the whole series. game 1: Roberts singled, stole second and then scored on a Gwynn single to give SD the quick 1-0 lead. Roberts then gave it back in the bottom of the inning by allowing 2 x-play singles. Throw in a 1-5 bp single and the Dodgers had a 3-1 lead when the inning was over. Padres had a single and double to open the 2nd but couldn't score. Karros homered in the 3rd and Cianfrocco doubled and came all the way around on an error in the 4th. In the 8th, Mondesi singled, stole 2nd and went to 3rd on the throwing error before scoring to make the final 5-2. game 2: Scott Sanders had his best game, tossing a complete game shutout. He allowed 5 hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out 10. The offense woke up in this one as well. Segui had a 2 run double in the 2nd, getting a 20 on his 1-14 hr chance. In the 5th, SD had 3 singles and 3 walks (2 with the bases loaded) to score 4 times. All the action came with 2 outs. Ausmus had an rbi grounder in the 8th to make it a 7-0 final. game 3: Dodgers got an unearned run in the first which proved to be the difference in this one. Bautista had a sac fly in the 4th but LA got that right back when Langston doubled in a run. Bautista tied it in the 6th on a grounder but Karros homered in the bottom of the inning to give LA the 3-2 win. SD had 3 bp homer chances and the lowest split was a 16. Karros got a 5 on his hr (not a bp chance). game 4: Took SD a lot longer to win this one then it should have...13 innings to be exact. Another sb+error led to a Dodger first inning run. Segui led off the 2nd with a homer to tie the game. Dodgers used a pair of rbi doubles to take a 3-1 lead by the fifth. Karros had one in the 4th and Nixon the other in the 5th. Discarcina led off the 6th with a single but was thrown out at the plate on Bell's double. Cianfrocco hit a sac fly to get the Padres within one. Padres were down to their last out when Segui came through with an rbi double to tie the game. In the 10th, 2 walks (1 intentional) set the stage for Cianfrocco once again. He came through with a single and what looked like a sure win. The 1-19 runner was sent. Remember I said this one took 13 innings and this is only the 10th. Split of 20 for the play at the plate still had a 50-50 chance. Another 20 and the inning was over. Dodgers threatened in the 11th. With 2 outs and a man on first, Vizquel got the 2b 1 but the runner didn't even try to score and Lindeman struck out to end the inning. Bell led off the 13th with a double and scored on Williams' sac fly (the split of 10 was the closest SD came to a bp homer all series). Hoffman struck out the side on 11 pitches to get the save in the 4-3 win. Hoffman and Davis combined to face the last 5 Dodgers and struck out all 5 on just 19 pitches. |
