Subject: Reds @ Giants

The Reds continue to play lackadaisical baseball, particularly in the field, as we wobble towards a possible playoff spot.  This week we took 2 of 3 from a Giants team that insisted on putting up a pretty good fight....

Game 1: Erik Hanson and Hector Carrasco combined to 4-hit the Giants, but San Francisco got maximum mileage out of those 4 hits, and (as was the them all series long) the normally-solid Cincinnati defense sprung leaks as often as possible.

A timely free pass -- one of 9 issued by the Reds today -- was followed seconds later by a Matt Williams gopher which turned our 1-0 lead into a 2-1 deficit.  Then with the score 2-2 in the 8th we racked up another unearned, undeserved loss without the SFN offense having to lift a finger (walk, walk, error, sac fly).  Final score: 3-2.

William Vanlandingham's first career start against the Reds was a successful one, as he was able to overcome the fact that we outhit the Giants 7-4 with 4 of those 7 going for extra bases.  But our typical lack of clutch hitting, being squeezed all day long by the home plate umpire, and that perfectly timed error was something the Reds were not able to overcome.

===========================================================================

Game 2: The Cincy offense annihilated a parade of San Fran hurlers, but a 22-10 advantage in hits and a *43* to 16 stomping in the total base category (including 5 homers for the Reds) still wasn't sufficient to eliminate considerable doubt regarding the outcome of the contest.  11 LOB and some more sabotage defense kept it much closer than was warranted.

Our 2-0 lead after half an inning was quickly erased by a pair of SFN triples with a timely blown-x in between.  One frame later, our '2' in LF came up with not one, not two, not three, but a 4-base blown-x howler that donated unearned runs #2 and #3 of the day.

A blistering attack in the middle innings put the visitors on top by the count of 12-5, but mop-up reliever Jeff Brantley was generous to his ex-teammates and the Reds didn't dare breathe easy until the last out was recorded.  Final score: 13-8.

Five different Cincy batters went deep, with catcher Benito Santiago leading the way on a 5-hit, 4-RBI performance.  CIN starter Jose Rijo combined with Brantley to amass 16 strikeouts.

===========================================================================

Game 3: CIN scrub Paul Gibson has been nigh unhittable in most of his very few starts this season, and Gibson was having another decent if unspectacular outing when his 4-1 was lead was suddenly forfeit in the SFN 7th via a 3-run totally unearned gopher.  SFN second baseman Terry Shumpert, recovering from his 4 strikeout collar yesterday, uncaged the vicious rodent after another timely Cincinnati error gave the Giants a fourth out in the inning.

The Reds again were way out in front in terms of hits (11-6) and total bases (18-9) and our pitchers had long since stopped walking everyone in the house, but as usual the Giants took full advantage of every break we graciously sent their way.

Finally in the 10th inning, the Reds rallied against reliever Tony Fossas -- and an error (by Fossas) went in our favor for a change as we plated 3 runs.  Two were unearned but the remaining one would have been enough to prevail by itself.  Final score: 7-4 in 10.

With the bases loaded and 1 out in the 10th, Tony Fernandez had a chance to break the game open with a mere 1-19 chance at a big hit but drew a 'Cincy Special' split card instead and found the out.  Fortunately, reliever Hector Carrasco then proceeded to make like a statue at home plate and drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run**.  He also got the job done on the mound (2 IP, 0 hits, 0 walks, 4 K's and a win).

** The Giants were not wrong to work Carrasco carefully; he is batting 1.000 this year.
