Sox inch closer to claiming the wild card by taking 3 of 4 north of the border.
game 1: Sox smack 6 round trippers in this one. Brunansky had 3 of them and Eusebio, Vaughn had one. Even Jose Lind got into the act with his 2nd of the year. Sox scored in 7 of the 9 innings. Meanwhile Sid Fernandez was sailing along until a 4 batter stretch in the 7th. Toronto, got 2b,2b,hr,2b in a row and scored 4 times to make the final 12-6. The 3 Blue Jays that pitched all ended the game with an era over 10, even though Timlin tossed 2 scoreless innings. Cooper pulled the rare double feat in this one. He was the only Sox player not to get a hit as well as only one not to score.
game 2: McDowell walked, stole 2nd and scored on a Berryhill single to put Boston up 1-0 in the 3rd. Toronto got an unearned run in the 4th and Gonzalez homered in the 5th to tie the game. Sox got 3 singles in the 6th to tie it. Cooper tripled and scored on a sac fly in the 8th to give Boston the 3-2 win. Zane Smith recovered from his disasterous first start to get his era down to 5.40 and earn his first win . Maddux got his 2nd save. Kirby had 2 caught stealings coming into the game and was caught twice in the first 3 innings of this one, both after not getting the jump (but still 70%).
game 3: Eusebio homered in the 1st to give Boston the early lead. Cormier looked to follow Smith with a good 2nd start as a Sox player. He took a shutout into the 4th before Carter homered to tie the game. Gonzalez led off the 5th with another homer and Carter had an rbi single to make it 3-1. Jays added a run in the 7th when James tripled with 2 outs and scored on a single. Canseco homered in the 8th but the Jays got that run back to win 5-2. 5 of the first 6 Sox batters missed their split chances, but at least Greenwell's 18 was a double and not an out like the other 4. Meanwhile, Toronto got a single and double from their first 2 batters to jump to a 1-0 lead. Clemens would allow just one more hit in his 7.2 innings. Stayed that way until Bruno led off the 9th with a no doubt about it hr (split of 1) to tie the game. Canseco and Carter both missed bp homers in the 10th (1-14 chances). Cooper hit a 2 run homer in the 12th to give Boston the 3-1 win. Maddux got the win and Bankhead retired the only batter he faced for his 5th save.
game 4: With 2 pretty even pitchers in Clemens and Hentgen going, it was a matter of which team would get the breaks.
