Pittsburgh was very efficient with their hits. After scoring 2 runs in the first inning of game 3, the Pirates had 7 runs on just 9 hits for the series. game 1: Hits were pretty scarce in this one as SD outhit the Buccos 5-4. As usual, the opponent had little trouble finding the few hits on Benes' card. Doubles on 6-6 and 6-9 gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the 2nd. In t he 3rd, Cole reached on an error, stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on a squeeze to make it 2-0. In the 5th, 2 walks, a wild pitch and sac fly made it 3-0. Ausmus 2 out rbi double in the 7th was the extent of the Padre offense in this one as the Pirates won 3-1. game 2: Ashby allowed just 2 hits in his 7 innings but they produced 2 runs. Caminiti had given the Padres a 2-0 lead with an rbi double in the first and single in the 3rd. With 2 outs and a runner on first, the Bucs got a triple and double to tie the game. The Padres offense finally woke up in the 7th, scoring 5 times. The first 7 batters produced a triple, 2 doubles and 3 singles. The lone out? Would you believe  Tony Gwynn struck out on roll that was  in the middle of 3 singles? After leading off the 7th with a triple, Roberts led off the 8th with a double and scored to make the final 8-2. Ashby and Grimsley combined to strike out 12 Pirates. game 3: Cole singled to open the game and stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on the wild throw. 2 doubles produced another run. Danny Bautista launched his 3rd homer since coming over from Detroit to cut the lead in half in the 2nd. Williams doubled in 2 runs in the 3rd to give SD the lead. A wild pitch moved a runner into scoring position for Van Slyke and he came through with an rbi single in the 4th to tie the game. Gwynn's rbi single in the 5th put the Padres back on top but they left the bases loaded. They would leave them loaded in the 7th as well (an inning that started with 3 walks). Gomez had an rbi single and another run scored on a passed ball (taking a sac fly away from Gwynn on his ab) to make the final 6-3. Hoffman had a 1-2-3 9th for his 31st save.
