Subject: Reds @ Marlins
The Reds come one patented you-know-what away from a sweep before the bullpen (as it also did in game 2) decided to prove that it's fully prepared for some crucial postseason chokin'.... Game 1: A starting pitcher who enters the game with 1 win in 7 starts, an ERA of 7 and who proceeds to choke up 5 runs in the very first inning (the major contribution by our sabotage defense notwithstanding) usually isn't going to hang around very long. But Tim Pugh did hang around -- for 9 innings and a win -- because the Cincy offense rapidly stormed back and turned deficits of 5-1 and 7-3 into an eventual 14-8 win. In an ugly complete-game effort, Pugh permitted 16 baserunners (9 hits, 7 walks) and 2 more were added via errors by the defense, both of those coming in the first inning. FLN starter Al Leiter permitted 15 baserunners, but his were jammed into a brief 2.2 inning stint. The keystone of the comeback was a 5-run 3rd which negated Florida's 5-run first. The Reds sent 11 men to the plate in that frame, collecting 6 hits and 2 walks. Cincy wound up on the happy end of a 25-11 margin in total bases (11 TB became 8 runs -- how very efficient), and even with Pugh's wildness we drew more free passes, 9-7. Pugh went 1 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI and scored twice to help his own cause, which needed as much help as possible. ====================================================================================== Game 2: With CIN starter Erik Hanson in inning conservation mode, a managerial error caused him to be pulled while pitching a shutout, one inning prior to being eligible for the win. The move was not only costly to Hanson's record, it nearly cost his team the game as the Cincy Arson Squad was unfortunately all too ready for action. With the score 10-0 after 4 1/2 innings, the visitors' offense having battered a couple of Florida Johns (Cummings and Habyan), Hanson was inadvertently removed from the game and reliever Hector Carrasco proceeded to have the worst outing of his life. He coughed up 12 baserunners in 4 innings, and somehow "only" 5 of them scored to turn a 10-0 lead into an 11-5 nailbiter after 8 innings -- the kind of narrow lead which the Cincy pen is fully capable of forfeiting. But the Marlins ran out of time, and Jeff Brantley was awarded the win after supplying an uneventful bottom of the 9th. Final score: 12-5. The CIN offense racked up 23 total bases to Florida's mere 10, but a pair of idiotic decisions almost wasted that effort. ====================================================================================== Game 3: Another day, another bullpen meltdown -- and this one was fatal. Hittable Charlie Hough had his floater working to perfection (6 IP, 3 hits, 0 walks, 5 Ks) for the M's, but Cincy's Kevin Gross was even more brilliant (8 IP, 4 hits, 0 walks, 10 Ks) and the Reds broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of late runs to take a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th. Todd Jones, a la Carrasco, put the match to the gasoline immediately upon entering and he was abruptly removed after allowing 3 hits in the space of 4 batters. Chuck McElroy was summoned to face a lefty batter who unsurprisingly morphed into a righty pinch hitter, and Big Mac retired him though his RBI groundout tied the game -- and then McElroy promptly served up the RBI single which lost it. Final score: 4-3. FLN reliever Todd Worrell wasn't exactly dominant (5 batters faced, 3 reached base, 1 scored) but his feebleness couldn't match that of the experts in the CIN pen, and Worrell (7-1, 4.36) was awarded the win.
