Subject: BAA @ TOA Week 23

(Note: No new CM for next week.)

The baseball couldn’t stay in the park as the Blue Jays took three of four from the visiting Orioles.

Game 1: BAA 11, TOA 5

With little left to lose, the Orioles gambled and won on the basepaths twice in the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead in a rally that included doubles by Brady Anderson and Harold Baines.  (No, Baines was not involved in the risky baserunning, or in his case basewalking.)  Toronto got one back in the bottom of the inning when Joe Carter hit the third single of the inning off Baltimore starter Curt Schilling, but the O’s chased Jays starter Todd Stottlemyre in the 2nd with a bases-clearing double by Craig Grebeck.  Reliever Tony Castillo fared no better, giving up four more runs before the top of the 2nd finally ended.  Schilling stumbled through the second, allowing an RBI on a Luis Rivera single and loading the bases before putting out the fire.  A fielder’s choice and a sac fly in the 4th cut the lead to 10-4, and Carter added a solo homer in the 7th, which was quickly cancelled out in the 8th when Bill Spiers singled in a run.  The Blue Jays briefly roused the few remaining fans by loading the bases in the ninth, but to no avail.  Schilling gave up 8 hits and 6 walks in 5 1/3 innings but still wound up with a W.

Game 2: TOA 5, BAA 4

The game was scoreless until Paul Molitor took Mike Mussina deep in the bottom of the third for a one-run Toronto lead.  Joe Magrane, who entered the game with an ERA of 9.12, took a two-hit shutout into the 5th until he remembered he was Joe Magrane; four walks and a two-run Craig Biggio single later, Magrane was headed to the showers; before the inning was over, Rafael Palmeiro singled in another run for a 4-1 Baltimore lead.  But Magrane’s issues must have been contagious, because in the bottom of the 5th, Mussina walked two batters to tee up a game-tying second homer by Molitor.  In the bottom of the 8th, pinch-runner Roberto Alomar stole second and third with two outs, which was probably moot because he would have scored anyway when Ed Sprague hit his decisive double.

Game 3: TOA 4, BAA 3 (11)

Baltimore took a 2-0 lead in the 4th on RBI singles by Spiers and Tony Longmire that also, surprisingly, sent Blue Jays starter Juan Guzman to an early shower.   Two errors helped the Orioles add a run in the 6th.  After scattering six hits in six shutout innings, Orioles starter Charles Nagy ran out of luck in the 7th, giving up a game-tying three-run homer to Rivera.  The Orioles had already pretty much emptied their bench by the bottom of the ninth, when reliever Jeff Juden made an error to load the bases but was bailed out by an unlikely 5-2-3 double play to send the game into extras.   Juden pulled out another miracle in the tenth; after walking Carlos Delgado (.208) and Domingo Cedeno (.146) to load the bases, he got Molitor to fly out.  But in the bottom of the 11th, Orioles manager Charlie Steinhice had planned to pull Juden but carelessly left him in for one batter, Joe Orsulak, who naturally responded with a walkoff homer.

Game 4: TOA 12, BAA 6

Orsulak’s hot streak carried over as he hit a two-run shot off Ben McDonald in the bottom of the 1st.  In the 2nd, Baltimore’s Leo Gomez got one run back with a inning homer off Jim Abbott, but Pat Borders doubled in a run to make it 3-1.  Carter padded the lead with a two-run blast in the 3rd, and Rivera followed suit in the 4th, chasing McDonald and putting Toronto up 7-1.  In the top of the 6th, Gomez decided those two-run homers looked fun and made it 7-3.  But in the Toronto 7th, after Orsulak doubled in a run, a Cal Ripken error and a wild pitch added two more runs to make it 10-3.  Abbott was still around in the top of the 8th to allow a two-run homer to Hoiles and another solo shot by Gomez – his third homer of the game!  But Delgado and Molitor hit two out in the bottom of the frame to push the Jays’ lead back up to six runs.
