Subject: Reds @ Cubs
Two teams who kept several important players stapled to the bench ran out the clock in Chicago, the Reds more so than the Cubs as the visitors played without Kevin Mitchell and the entire starting infield for most of the series.... Game 1: Luckless Jose Rijo concluded his final noteworthy season in the majors with an 8-0 shutout of the Cubs. Rijo's stats over the course of the 1994 campaign were only a little worse than his card warranted, but his horrible luck (and an unhealthy dose of sabotage defense) caused him to miss his actual MLB ERA by many miles. The only place Rijo did better than expected this year was at the plate, where the .204 hitter finished the season at .260 by going 2 for 4 today and leading the charge with 3 RBI. Reggie Sanders came a double away from hitting for the cycle, and a true once-in-a-blue-moon event occurred when CIN scrub Mark Lewis, in his 142nd plate appearance of the season, finally drew walk #1 (he wasn't close to the walkless record). It was one of 8 issued on the day by CHN starter Darryl Kile and a series of relievers. Harold Reynolds, rescued from the scrap heap minutes earlier, made his Cincy debut with a 3 for 6 day that included a double and an RBI. The 8-0 margin would have been far greater were it not for 15 CIN LOB; we LOBbed the bases loaded twice, then hit into a DP with them loaded just for a change of pace. ====================================================================================== Game 2: Just what two usage-impaired teams needed: a 13-inning marathon. Cincy's John Roper had an excellent outing for the final time in his career, going 9 innings without recording a complete game or getting a well-earned win thanks to another LOB-a-thon by his teammates. Roper permitted just 8 baserunners (6 singles, 1 double, 1 walk) in his 9 IP and he fanned 6 Cubs. For his part, CHN starter Rick Sutcliffe has appeared in 21 games including this one, and both of his quality appearances this year were against the Reds. The rest of the league was batting **.399** against this chump in nearly 200 AB in his other 19 outings. Today the Amazing Sutcliffe only went 5 innings but they were outstanding: 4 hits, all singles, 1 walk, 1 run, 4 K's. The Reds took a brief timeout from all the LOB and began erasing a 2-0 deficit when Roper, batting less than .100 for the season, singled home a run in the fifth; John Kruk's single plated Reynolds an inning later against reliever Xavier Hernandez, and the Reds parlayed 4 singles and a walk and a timely GIDP in the 10th into 2 runs and the 4-2 win. All of today's runs aside from one in the 10th scored with 2 outs. ====================================================================================== Game 3: The Reds emptied much of the bench in the final road contest of 1994, and for the second straight day were held to nothing but singles and walks (and very few of them) by an atrocious Chicago starter, in this case Terry Mulholland. Today there were no extra-inning heroics, the Cubs jumped on Cincy starter Tim Pugh for 2 undeserved runs in the first inning and pulled away for a 5-2 win, as the powerful Cincinnati offense heads into the postseason sputtering and wheezing on all cylinders. Each team had 6 hits today, the only one of the 12 which wasn't limited to one base was Sammy Sosa's 35th home run of the season. As in each of the first two contests, a CIN starting pitcher had to help provide his own support, Pugh going 1 for 2 with an RBI today. Each of four CIN relievers tallied one perfect inning after Pugh had dug the hole sufficiently deep. Alan |
