Both teams went to the bench liberally throughout the series. After a couple low scoring games to open the set, the floodworks opened in the final 2. We can only hope the playoffs feature the hitting of the last 2 games but the pitching of the first 2 games.
game 1: Easley got hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Bell single to give SD a quick 1-0 lead. A xplay single to the pitcher started the Rockies 2nd inning. Espinosa had a 2 run 1 out single to give the Rockies the lead. The next 15 batters went down in order for the 2 teams as Grimsley and Scanlan were lights out. Young tripled and scored on an Espinosa bunt to make it 3-1 in the 7th. That turned out to be a big run as Lockhart had a ph homer in the 8th. It was his 2nd and the team's 10th pinch homer on the year. Colorado held on for the 3-2 win.
game 2: While not quite Felix Fermin hitting 2 homers, this one came close to the hosing that the Padres went through. They missed 2 bp singles (1-17 chances), missed a hit to the 5 in centerfield that would have scored and had not 1, but 2 x play singles thrown out after wide turns. Roberts led the game off with a single, went to 2nd on a bunt and scored on a Bell double to give the Padres the quick lead again. Easley homered in the 4th but 1b,2b,wp,2b brought in 2 for Colorado to tie the game. Stayed that way until the 12th when the Padres worked their first 2 walks of the game. Phil Clark laced a 2 out single and was the 2nd of the guys thrown out after his wide turn at first. Speedster Tim Hyer managed to cross the plate before the tag to give SD the 3-2 win. Hoffman got save #37 while giving up one hit with 2 k's in the 9th.
game 3: Again the Padres scored in the first, but this time it was 3 runs. Roberts walked and Discarcina singled. After Gwynn hit in to a fc, Williams walked to load the bases. A wild pitch and Clark sac fly brought in 2 runs and Bell doubled in the 3rd. Lieberthal followed with a single but Bell was thrown out on a 19 to end the inning. Roberts had an rbi double and then scored on Discarcina's single to make it 5-0 in the 2nd. Colorado used a pair of walks, a single, double and wild pitch to score twice in the 3rd. The Padres responded by batting around and scoring 6 runs. The big blow was a 3 run homer by Bautista. The teams traded runs in the 8th before Williams hit a 3 run homer in the 9th to cap the 15-3 win. Sager went 3 innings to get the vulture save as Clark won his 11th game.
game 4: Apparently the Chargers and Broncos showed up for this one. The Broncos had a late rally to score 11 runs on 22 hits and still lost by a touchdown and 2 point conversion. Armando Reynoso fooled no one in this game. Roberts started with a W single and Discarcina bunted him to second. Bautista and Caminiti followed with homers (all 3 batters rolled 6-5). There were 2 singles and a wild pitch before out #2 was finally made. 3 straight walks forced in a run and chased Reynosa. Discarcina had a 2 run single before out #3 was finally made. In the 2nd Segui had an rbi single and scored on Ausmus' homer to make it 10-0. In the 3rd, it was 3b, out, 2b,1b to bring in one before Bell "lofted" an x play flyball (at least according to the pbp). Fears of a 3rd batter being thrown out for a wide turn were unfounded as the Rockies outfielders collided allowing Bell to get an inside the park homer. An error and triple followed before outs 2 and 3 were made. If you lost track that was 15 runs in the first 3 innings, on just 14 hits. The Rockies finally got on the board in the 3rd with a single, double, wp and ground out. After a scoreless 4th, Segui hit a 2 run homer for SD. Rockies used 3 singles and a walk to score 2 of their own to narrow in to a 17-4 game. Cianfrocco had an rbi double and scored in the 6th.Greg Hibbard left after 5 and Donnie Elliot came on for batting practice. He threw a masterful 6 hit inning with 3 of them being bp singles (2 were splits of 18 and 19 on the 1-19 chance). Sager and Bedrosian followed and faired just slightly better. Sager allowed 4 hits and a run while Bedrosian allowed 3 hits and a run to make the final 19-11.
Tony Gwynn finishes the season with a "disappointing" .380 average.
