Subject: 1994 N.L. Divisional Series, SDN-CIN game 3
Cincy's John Smiley had been mediocre through much of the 1994 season; Padre rookie Joey Hamilton had been generally brilliant. One of the two pitchers continued in his usual manner today while the other had an outing he isn't likely to forget anytime soon. There was a scoreless first inning for a change in this offensively-oriented series, though the Reds had to work hard to accomplish that non-scoring feat (3 LOB). Felix Jose hit the ball on the nose with 2 outs and the sacks full, but he lined it right at second baseman Bip Roberts. San Diego broke on top moments later when Eddie Williams singled, raced to third on Derek Bell's hit, then waltzed home when a Smiley offering eluded catcher Benito Santiago. It was a wild pitch, not a passed ball, but Santiago wasted no time in redeeming himself anyway, hitting Cincinnati's 8th home run of the series to tie the game 1-1 after 2 innings. Smiley's mediocrity continued unabated however, when he allowed the first of 2 hits to the opposing pitcher (who'd had 5 hits all season and batted .116), both on the same unlikely-to-find-a-hit-there dice roll of 4-2. Cincy fans knew that didn't bode well, and they were right -- light-hitting Gary Disarcina smashed a double which sent Hamilton to third, and both scored on a 2-out clutch hit by Williams. Smiley (a .176 batter during the season) showed that Hamilton wasn't the only pitcher who could find a fluke hit. His single, like Hamilton's, was also costly to the opposition as it came with 2 outs in the 4th and plated Reggie Sanders from second base. 3-2, Padres. The Cincy offense finally showed up in the 6th. Sanders doubled and Jose singled to tie the game, then with 2 outs pinch-hitter John Kruk's single kept the inning alive so that Bret Boone could chase 2 runners home with a triple and give his team a 5-3 lead. Boone had 3 hits today, one of each kind except a home run. His missing power would be adequately replaced by a teammate. Hamilton had begun weakening in the 6th, and the wheels came off entirely in the 7th. Hal Morris led off with a home run, Kevin Mitchell fanned on 4 pitches, then 7 of the next 8 batters reached base and all 7 scored. The final nail in the coffin came when Morris returned to home plate and perhaps set (or at least tied) a postseason record by homering twice in one inning, the final wallop being a 3-run shot which capped the 8-run uprising. There were no beanballs today, as Hamilton just didn't have it in him. The Padres rallied one last time in the 9th with a homerun, a walk and 3 singles and it appeared that the Reds might actually consider blowing a 13-3 lead (who else could?) but Hector Carrasco got Ken Caminiti to fly out to end the game and complete the surprising series sweep by the Reds. Hamilton endured a complete game for the visitors, permitting 15 hits, 29 total bases and 6 walks. Boone was named the series MVP for whatever that's worth, based on a 7 for 14 showing in the 3 games with a double, triple, 3 home runs, 5 runs scored and 7 RBI. The Reds now advance to the NLCS to face the winner of the Atlanta-Montreal series. Alan |
