Pedro Martinez squared off against Greg Maddux and where one might have expected a pitching duel this game demonstrated that this is 1994 baby!
The Expos struck immediately in the 1st on a Grissom single and stolen base who then scored on Baerga’s single to left. Kelsko bobbled the ball and Baerga advanced to third where he scored on Alou’s fly ball. A 2-0 first inning lead against Greg Maddux is a pretty good high. Too high for Martinez apparently who went out in the bottom of the first and served up two-run home runs to Justice and Lopez. Now elation gave way to depression as the Expos would have to find a way to score off Maddux again.
Expos cut the lead to one in the top of the 3rd when Bagwell doubled home Baerga with two-out. Martinez found his groove after his rough first inning and held the Braves at bay through the 5th. In the top of the 6th Bagwell led off with his 2nd double of the game went to third on Alou’s fly ball and scored on Cordero’s sac fly.
Having scratched back to a 4-4 tie against Maddux, Pedro Martinez again pissed away his good fortune when with one out he gave up back to back doubles to Lopez and Pendleton. After wild pitching Pendleton to third, Lemke’s squeeze bunt was kicked by Bagwell and Pendleton scored giving Atlanta a 6-4 lead.
Chuck Crim had come on with two out in the Expo 6th and he stayed in the game for the Expo 7th. Crim retired Karkovice but pinch-hitter Darren Lewis followed with a long triple. Marquis Grissom promptly singled him home. Grissom then stole 2nd and 3rd and still only 1 out. Baerga’s sac fly to center scored Grissom and the game was tied again 6-6.
Tim Scott came in to pitch for the Expos and stranded a lead-off single/error (3B Berry) by Ozzie Guillen by striking out Justice and getting fly balls from Murray and Klesko. Chuck Crim got the first two-outs to start the top of the 8th but then gave up a single to Sean Berry and then a double to Karkovice. Sean Berry beat Deion Sanders throw to the plate to break the 6-6 tie. Crim managed to get Grissom for the final out but the damage was done and the Expos took a 7-6 lead.
Expo Chris Howard was brought in to pitch the bottom of the 8th and promptly gave up a single to Javy Lopez who was replaced by pinch-runner Roberto Kelly. Expecting the worst from Howard who never seemed to pitch to his ability he induced Pendleton to fly out and got Lemke on a force play. Charlie O’Brien hit for Crim who hit a routine fly to center.
Greg McMichael pitched a scoreless top of the 9th and the stage was set for John Wetteland who was immediately greeted by Deion Sanders with a single to right. The Braves spurned the bunt and Ozzie Guillen flied out to left. A formidable Dave Justice then came to the plate but Wetteland was up to the task as he induced a 4-6-3 double play to preserve the 7-6 Expo victory.
So much for the pitching duel. Tim Scott (1-0) got the win in relief and Wetteland the save. A beleaguered Chuck Crim (0-1) took the loss. Justice (1) and Lopez (1) hit home runs. Bagwell hit 3 doubles with 1 run and 1 rbi.
Expos........... 2 0 1 0 0 1 2 1 0 - 7 11 2 Braves.......... 4 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 - 6 11 1
Way too nerve wracking for me!! Files attached for this game.
