Subject: Expos at Mets Week 6
Expos and Mets roll around in the dirt to split four games. Fun series. Damn that Johnny Bench, though. He hits 3 homers in game one. New Montreal manager attached for week 7. Game 1 Catcher Johnny Bench ripped 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the New York NL Mets pulled out a win over the Montreal Expos by a score of 8 to 6 at Shea Stadium. New York NL won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Art Shamsky led off and keyed the rally when he delivered a one-base hit. Bench came next and he smashed a two-run homer (his 14th of the season) resulting in an exciting win for New York NL and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times. Ron Taylor(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing no runs. Howie Reed(1-1) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 2 hits in 1 inning. 'Some days it just all comes together, and this was one of them' Bench said. 'I've been seeing the ball pretty well lately.' Game 2 Bob Bailey slammed 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the Montreal Expos outscored the New York NL Mets 9 to 3. Bailey really lit it up for Montreal. The New York NL fans let him have it for what he did to their boys. He lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 7th inning and rifled a three-run blast (his 11th of the season) in the 8th inning. Montreal finished with 10 hits in the victory. The winning pitcher was Claude Raymond(1-2) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Jim McAndrew(4-1) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 5 hits and 5 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. Game 3 Sam McDowell reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts as the New York NL Mets topped the Montreal Expos by a score of 6 to 4 at Shea Stadium. McDowell(5-2) gave New York NL a solid outing. He surrendered 9 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings and surrendered 2 homeruns. Montreal had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. McDowell got help from Ron Taylor who was credited with his 3rd save. Carl Morton(3-1) was hit with the loss. New York NL scored big getting 6 runs off him in 4 and 1/3 innings. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of McDowell - except Montreal. Steve Bivens lamented, 'He just was 'on' tonight. He was keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!' Game 4 Steve Renko took a no-hitter into the 7th inning at Shea Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the New York NL Mets 4 to 2. Renko(6-1) had a solid outing for Montreal. He went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 1 hit and 7 walks seeing his ERA drop from 2.51 to 2.19. The right-handed Renko lost his chance for a no-hitter when Ted Savage singled with two outs in the 7th inning. Montreal had just 5 hits for the afternoon. Jack Aker earned his 11th save. Nolan Ryan(1-4) was hit with the loss. Montreal now has a record of a division leading 27-12. With the loss, the New York NL ballclub's record is 23-16. |
