Subject: Reds @ Expos

The Reds tiptoe into Park Jarry (which looks suspiciously like Yankee
Stadium), hoping not to do too badly against the Monsters of the N.L.
East....

Game 1: Cincy's luck is the same as it ever was, as we drop a 2-1 decision.
Barry Lersch went the distance, allowing only 5 hits and 5 walks. Don
Wilson allowed 4 of each in his 7.2 IP of work for the Reds. Even when runs
scored, the offenses were lacking: Montreal got their runs on an Alex
Johnson groundout and a Lersch sacrifice fly. Cincy's run scored on a Don
Wilson sac fly.

The teams combined to go 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position. I don't
know how the Expos normally fare in that area, but it sure was a typical
performance for the Reds (see also game 3).

Game 2: Shaky Jim McGlothlin matched up against Carl Morton in this one, and
while McGlothlin was his ever-erratic self, he got the better of this one as
Morton didn't survive the first inning. Morton retired only 2 batters, and
departed after allowing 5 first-inning runs.

The last time we scored 5 in the first, it turned out to be a tactical
error - we were losing big-time by the third inning and eventually gave up
18 runs for the game (Billingham was the lucky victim on that day).

McGlothlin tried his best to live up to that feat, allowing 2 runs to the
Expos in each of the first two frames. However on this day the Reds offense
didn't let up: four Montreal relievers were battered almost as badly as
Morton, in the 15-4 rout. McGlothlin allowed only 5 hits in 8 IP (only 2
hits after the second), while the Reds pounded out 18 of them (16 singles, 2
homers) off the Expos hurlers with lightweight Eddie Leon leading the way
with four safeties. Pete Rose, of all people, took an o-fer.

Tony "Batting Practice" Cloninger achieved what is probably a career best
for him by actually retiring *3* consecutive batters in a meaningless ninth
inning appearance.

Game 3: Not as much fun as game 2, but we'll take it. Jack Billingham &
Steve Renko combined to allow 1 ER in 13 IP, as the Reds managed to eke one
out for a change by the score of 2-0. Cincy outhit the home team by the
count of 10 to 3, but our normal utter lack of clutch performance allowed
the game to remain close. Three Cincinnati relievers combined to preserve
the shutout.

Joe Morgan and Tony Perez provided the RBIs, as the teams once again treated
the fans to an awesome display of choking at the plate (combined 1 for 13
with RISP).
